New low? I'm sorry Jimmy V had cancer...doesn't change the fact that he ran a dirty program. NC State didn't just decide to nuke its basketball program for 20 years for no reason.

You have zero understanding of what happened with V. Zero. The UNC - lead BOG is what sent our program into a death spiral - NOT the NCAA, and lastly not Jimmy V. There was a letter written to V from the lead investigator commending Jimmy on a stellar program he'd be proud to send his own son to. Did some players screw up and sell some shoes and some tickets - yes; but your miscategorization of Jimmy V is weak and tired.

My comments were specific to the Valvano timeframe and activities at NCSU. In my 20's during V's heyday and living in Garner/Raleigh/Cary, Hillsboro Street was THE place to mingle (college bars, etc.) and I did a lot of mingling. Many of my closest friends were going to and/or graduated from NCSU (including scholarship athletes), with parents that were active Wolfpack Club members. Suffice to say that I witnessed transgressions first-hand and heard about many others via trusted resources. The things that you attempt to crucify UNC with were common occurrences in and around Western Blvd and Hillsboro Street...and that was just the tip of the iceberg. He!!, even State's own heavyweights were turned off by the Valvano arrogance -- including Mrs. V's holier-than-thou attitude in and around MacGregor.

So I should take your anecdotal "evidence" to the bank and just accept the UNC-lead BOG was in the right in what they did to State? Sorry, that's too easy an out. Until the BOG steps up and adds to the NCAA sanctions you will never be able to claim we were dealt the same hands. The deck is stacked as long as Hannah Guage and her cronies are in charge. I'm guessing you didn't read the emails exchanged b/w her and UNC administration during the NCAA "review"? Downright sickening in light of how State, an equal UNC Public University system, was treated. You'll never see it, because you don't want to see it.

Am not claiming the two were dealt equally.
Am claiming that NCSU was much dirtier during V's tenure than you care to admit.
Am also claiming that NCSU has had more than ample opportunity to right themselves after Valvano was booted. Some Pack fans acknowledge (i.e., do not blame the BOG for decades of ineptitude) -- you, obviously, fit the Red Rager tag to a 't' (adding credibility to the moniker of the most destructive college fanbase in the state).

Maybe if your school got to deal with an AD hand picked by NC State folks, you would feel a bit different. Honestly, I don't care. "The Carolina Way" is a myth that has now been exposed for what it really is and yet your narcism shines as bright as ever. Jimmy V was a great man, and your stories of what you saw in a bar 30 years ago is NOT going to make me feel one bit different. I know it helps your agenda to make State out to be the dirty program that hasn't been able to succeed since we were busted, but that dog won't hunt. You can sling your little names at me all you want, because I know your kind and honestly have wasted far more time than I should responding. I guess I felt compeled to defend a man that has done more for a great cause than you could EVER dream of doing in 3 lifetimes, yet feel necessary to spit on his grave. Y'all stay classy.

My opinion of V (and Mrs. V) is based on a decade's worth of observation and interaction that extends well beyond what was seen in a bar. He was human and possessed human qualities that ran the gambit on both ends of the good/bad spectrum. Valvano wasn't all bad -- but he was much further from all good than you care to admit.

I know your kind and honestly, not surprised at the "woe-is-me" defense when it comes to NCSU's inability to manage its way out of a self-inflicted funk for the better part of 3 decades.

Please excuse the handwriting but I want this to be personal and not something off a typewriter or a computer. If you have trouble reading this, I apologize, but it is the best I can do. I am writing because I have become very fond of you throughout the course of the investigation. I guess we are not good friends, but as friendly as we can become through meeting under these circumstances. When I was first assigned this case I had no idea what you were all about. I had some knowledge of you from your TV appearances and I suspected I might encounter some smart-@#%$ egomaniac who would try to bull**** me. Those impressions vanished after I met you and spent some time around you just listening to your philosophy about basketball, academics, life, and other things we touched on.

I consider myself a fairly good judge of character after the experiences I have had here, and I have come to believe that you are one of the best people I have met in intercollegiate athletics and one of the best people I have met period. I do know the pressures you operate under, I do not know how your family has been affected by these proceedings, and I guess I canÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½t know how you feel about your status at N.C. State because I donÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½t walk in your shoes and finally, I know you are not stupid or crazy and will make decisions based on your good judgement. Anyway, what all this leads up to is what I told you before in your office: you're good for intercollegiate athletics, good for N.C. State and good for the NCAA. I hope you stay at N.C. State and continue to do as youÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½ve always done and not change anything about your methods or your personality. If I had a son, I would feel comfortable with you as his coach and encourage him to learn from you.

So anyway, for what it's worth, if you are thinking about leaving N.C. State, please make that decision based on sound reasons(I know you will) and not because of some outside influence or a whim.

I've grown to like you and respect you very much. I cannot say that about many people I have encountered in this job. If you decide to leave N.C. State, I know it will be because it is the best decision for you and your family -but it will be a big loss for the university, the ACC, the NCAA and the City of Raleigh. If I can support or help you in any way, I will. You have a lot of supporters and admirers nationwide. I hope you get some comfort from them. Please hang in there as best you can.
