Good start for the Pack!

Leslie, Howell, Brown, and Wood certainly lived up to everyone's expectations, but Purvis and Lewis really showed up, even if their stats don't reflect their full impact. Purvis is a good defender, and a much better shooter than advertised - not just a pure slasher. Lewis is a very capable PG for a freshman; he ran the offense well, looked confident, and had some WICKED passes. TJ Warren was solid too. He is really versatile - quick enough to play at the wings, big enough to play inside, and has really good reflexes and touch, along with a surprising amount of confidence for a freshman. Big things happening in Raleigh - it's showtime!

I sat on the front row for the game. My observations:
Returning starters are sick. Excellent rebounding and great 3 point shooting. Lewis is the real deal. It didn't take him long to get involved. The kid isn't afraid to drive and is an EXCELLENT passer. He's going to be one of the best in the nation next year or the year after. I'm still out on Purvis. He looked lost the first 2-2/12 quarters. Once he shook the nerves, you could see why he was a highly touted recruit. As long as he keeps his head in the game, he'll be a great addition. The bench was pretty decent, although I was not impressed by Vandenburg.
If everybody stays healthy, it's going to be an excellent season.

Agreed about Vandenburg, and Purvis too. It took Purvis a little while to get going on offense, but in the second half he really showed us some good stuff with his shooting. I was impressed with his defense for pretty much the whole game.
As far as Vandenburg and DeThaey go, I thought it was cool that Gottfried was experimenting with different lineups, including a "worst-case scenario" one where we need both of those guys in at the same time. DeThaey looks much better this year (he went crazy draining 3's in the last couple of minutes), so I think he'll get some regular backup PT. Vandenburg is to only be used in emergencies, lol.

Purvis will end up being the 2nd best defender on the team behind Leslie followed by Zo

ToBys track record against UNC spoke for itself....until it didnt. Takes 1 win to end a streak. Wont know who wins between State and the holes until the buzzer that ends the game, but theres a much different team on the floor this year than in decades. Is it a sure thing? of course not, but it definitely wont be a sure thing for the heels. .....feels kinda weird saying that outloud. lol

I think we'll have some growing pains when we play elite teams (Duke, UNC) because they are elite teams and we don't know what it feels like to beat them...yet. Win and our confidence grows. Could be an interesting year in the Triangle. Hope so.
