Cant blame them if they did. I think the admin at state thinks that if you hire a coach that he is going to win right of they bat. But to BUILD a program takes time it is not like a light switch click your good then click we suck.

For the sake of the few decent State fans out there, I hope the team and the lame-duck coaches don't tank the bowl game like ours did last year.

The last thing he thought is WHY oh Why did I come here. State has a reputation for firing coaches even though they are successful. Just look at past history Lowe,Sendek,Chuckie A. State either beats UNC or coaches get fired. And Now that Yow is running things it will get worse just reference Maryland where she managed to run off one of the best college bball coaches around. State is bowl bound but not with the coach who got them there. Please tell me why should the players care if they win or lose??

The close call against Maryland and the blowout by Virginia were much worse reflections on TOB. I do not think that beating UNC would have made that completely go away.
Recruiting was probably as large a reason as the win loss record.

I agree that the loss to Orange County Remedial School was not the sole cause of his firing, but they are certainly lumped in with other teams we should not have lost to.

    this article....

http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/obrien-out-at-nc-stateaccurately points to last year's loss to BC and this year's loss to UVA as the TRUE indicators of, big trouble in Raleighwood... "consistency", "o-line play", and "discipline" are all supposed strongsuits of TOB, and all of those showed signs of slipping in the previous two seasons..... if he can't at least deliver on those controllables, he can't likely get you to the next level.

genius of a man, limited as a Head football coach.

thanks again, TOB... you're clearly leaving the program in a far better place than it was when you arrived.

    Mehh...

DENIAL is what a majority of wolffie fans have lived for over a year now.

TRUTH is that TOB's job was lost last year by mid-season and the Maryland miracle only prolonged the inevitable.

Those wins against UNC were merely a smoke screen for the mediocrity that TOBy brought and sustained at Western Blvd. U.

Gio merely escalated Yow's decision-making timeframe (from post-bowl to pre-bowl).

That's a nice twist on why TOB got canned. But really, the bottom line, dollar, and sinker is Gio. Guess it's no big deal either way, but I bet you a dollar to a doughnut that if they won just that 1 game, we wouldn't be having this covo.

  • hovis Nov 25, 2012
    All Star

TOBy would likely not have been back even if he did not kick to Gio. Everyone would agree his recruiting was par/subpar. Lack of a high point season(s) caused people in control to question the programs' direction.

Recruiting would have aided TOB two ways. One,if the current class was good it would have given TOB's bosses the ability to say the future will be brighter. Two, if the class was good management would be less likely to fire him out of hand as it basically puts your recruits straight back in the mix.

For the record his recruiting was not terrible, but as far as the immediate future is concerned he did not recruit quarterbacks as should be expected in the last two years leaving a hole that the ad probably questioned.

^ He always managed to lose some games that he had no business losing (and usually win one per year that he had no business winning), but as long as he beat UNC he was safe. One loss to UNC was what knocked him off that tightrope he was walking. If he hadn't kicked to Gio, he'd be back next year.

  • early exit Roy Nov 25, 2012
    All Star

Dream on. You lose 1 out of 6 years and that killed him. What killed him was losing to uva, plus all the losses to teams he was suppose to beat, like maryland. Unc people would like to believe that was the reason. DY has been after him since she came to state. He doesn't recruit well but what he did recruit, two & three stars, were good enough to beat your four & five stars, that didn't know what a paragraph was nor had ever read a book. There is a major flaw in your thought process.
