Nice try. The problems started when lefty left. Don't take my word for it go back and look for your self. Lefy took the blame and the school took a dive. When Lefty left so did a lot of fund raiser. Fact

RE: SI Article: How Maryland went broke

WOW, DY is awesome!!!

Donors flocked to the department's primary fundraising arm, the Terrapin Club, helping the school build up its coffers. As the money flowed in, Yow expanded the athletic department, funneling money into non-revenue-generating sports, and she commenced a decade-long facelift to several athletic facilities. Starting in 2002 and continuing into 2010, Maryland opened the $125 million Comcast Center and the $3 million Terrapin Softball Complex, built a new facility for field hockey and lacrosse, renovated its soccer and baseball facilities and made multiple upgrades to its football offices. To cap it off, Maryland completed a $50.8 million expansion to Tyser Tower at Byrd Stadium in 2009. Byrd Stadium was one of the only ACC football stadiums without luxury seating, so Yow financed a plan that added 64 luxury suites and 440 mezzanine suites.

pretty clear that if the hoops and football teams hadn't started SUCKING so badly, this ship would still be sailing along nicely... with LUXURY ammenities....!!!

I guess they wanted HER to coach those teams!!!

GO DY!!!

she took them from 50 MILL in the bucket, to having a SURPLUS big enough to build grandiose accomodations.... she was clearly the bizzomb!!!

also, I like this extremely TELLING part of the article-
"Gary Williams didn't get along with the department," said Martin Green, a prominent donor who is on the Terrapin Club's executive committee. "A lot of people loved Gary because he won a national championship, but that was 10 years ago. That doesn't pay the bills."

hard to misconstrue that.

poor, poor, sweaty gary.

A scathing indictment of Dr. Debbie.

aerobics and tumbling) were cut.

That move drew the ire of many, especially after it was revealed in January that the school was financing a $7.2 million reconstruction of Loh's presidential mansion.

WOW!!!

I think you missed this part

But when Yow left in June 2010 to become athletic director at NC State, she also left the Maryland athletic department with three significant problems: a losing football team, an underachieving basketball team and a mountain of debt.

LOL

not much of a reader, eh lil fella???

I only read ONE person with negative things to say about Yow... and, that's because he was the coach of a team that was eventually CUT by the president.

also, LOL @ having a "women's water polo" team, and thinking that was a good thing.

sorry, pansy.... but the GOOD about DY in that article FAR OUTweighed the bad

LOL
so again, it was her fault that the fridge and sweatbox weren't getting it done??

if they'd stayed aggressive, not grown complacent on the recruiting trail (sweatbox was well known for being a LAZY recruiter)... they'd have still been operating around break even when she left for greener pastures.

tough break, pansy.

MORE revealing commentary....

"The majority of those that (the department) has lost are giving $125-$150 per year as opposed to the type of donor that's giving $20,000-$30,000 per year," said Green. "They've lost the lower echelon. It happens that basketball program is really in the doldrums ever since we won the national championship in 2002 and opened the Comcast Center. We weren't recruiting a lot of top talent and we fell behind in the ACC. You won't fill Comcast without having a successful program."

B-I-N-G-O, and bingo was his nameo!

RE: SI Article: How Maryland went broke

can't fault her for trying to improve the athletic dept and the facilities while things were good. having a booster club of only 8,000 donors speaks volumes about their fanbase and alumni. that number is deplorable considering the size of the school, the alumni population, and the name recognition. if no one wants to support the athletic dept then it's only natural to start doing some sports cutting. yow is not totally blameless in the MD debt monster though...in my opinion, she was a bit overzealous in committing money to so many projects at one time. in her defense though, who could foresee the sudden downfall of the bball and fball teams?

even when lee fowlup was running things, the wolfpack club had between 15,000 - 20,000 members. i think the membership is a shade over 20k right now. of course, us wolfpackers are so starved for a winner we'd do just about anything to bring home some championships. heck, after i win the lotto tonight i'm going to build a state of the art indoor practice facility for the football team and name it "buckets112 field at carter-finley stadium."
