All successful teams have 1-2 players that can talk in a huddle during the game, but they develop this in practice. A strong leader on the field or the court is like a coach. They are many times more a leader than some coaches. Respect and discipline are how leaders lead. Leaders have to be consistent. Leslie doesn't always have this.

He's playing much smarter in the last few games. When he plays well State wins games. His overall game has definitely improved since last season.

He has definitely improved. If he can stay in the game and not make elementary fouls, he will help this team in ways that he didn't deliver last year.

he's forced to cover a lot of guards in the paint because the perimeter D isn't what it should be (State hasn't stopped the dribble effectively since Herb ran off)... but to your point, the reaching in at 35 feet from the hoop are the ones he can't afford.

his heart is unquestionable and as hansflop showed us... it's hard to measure that.

Well...there is one major and viable "bad thing" to say about Howell. He commits to many silly fouls. He does seem to have improved this over last year though somewhat. Foul shooting is not great. Everything else he does very well.

He always looked like a good player, he has just never been able to stay in long enough. Check his stats from last year.

I think as State fans we're all just happy to see him being mentally tougher. Several games last year, he hung his head and checked out of the game, even though he was still on the sideline (much like the OK State game, where he had Leslie as company). But since then, he seems to have found some reserve of fortitude. If he can continue being Mr Consistent, I think he'll emerge as the bona fide leader of this team.

he can be a double-double regular with more minutes...he almost averages a double-double playing just over half the game!?....if he didnt have a terrible ft shooting%, he would be more dangerous..with the way he plays, hes gonna get fouled

He makes my all glue team for sure. State can survive with a smaller lineup, but the offense thrives with a big man in the lineup. I do think that with Warren replacing Wood in the starting lineup, State may have the most talented starting 5 in the triangle. It is a matter of how that translates in the W/L column, and that is where coaching comes in.

True, but State's smaller lineup with Leslie and Warren in the frontcourt isn't bad either, especially if they can get better at forcing turnovers. But Richard Howell (when he's not being "Richard Fowell") is a force in the paint, and ultra-consistent. I'm very glad State has him.

Richard Howell has improved drastically over the last two years. He still needs to develop a 10 foot jumper. The fact that he is the primary center, with little back up may hurt his game as the long season wears on. He must stay out of foul trouble and avoid fatique in order for NCSU to do damage this year.
