Still young, but not green. Staying with someone he's worked with before. Good bio and credentials. I like it! Hope he's up to the task.

As was already stated, this sounds great, you're never going to go very far with poor coaching, but you can have the best teacher in the world and still not amount to much (see Shavlik Randolph). I am happy we are putting the pieces in place, but I think patience is the word with regards to football.

The OC position is up in the air, Chaney was just a candidate who was in Raleigh and had interviewed the other day. Other names who have been thrown around include Matt Wells (OC Utah State) and Seth Littrell (OC Indiana). Chaney would be my preference of the three.

The definite hire so far is Nielsen for DL/Recruiting Coordinator. Ashe is close to being a done deal for DC as well. State has also contacted Tommy Thigpen (Auburn) about his interest at the LB position. He coached at UNC before Butch really got things going over there and is a monster recruiter. He may be in line for higher profile jobs, however.

Recruiting is the most important need. At least it was the most glaring need in the past.

^^^^^This is all so precious. State's got the next Urban Meyer as head coach and a team with the offensive explosiveness of Oregon and the toughness of Wisconsin. No doubt the tailgating will now be better than Ole Miss and LSU combined, as well.

So happy for you guys. C ya in the BCS. :-)

Chris Ashe is rumored to be coming down from Wisconsin to be our DC. He was the DC and DB coach at Wisconsin. Ash's relationship with Doeren dates back to his days as a player at Drake, and then he eventually succeeded Doeren as the DC at Drake and then later Wisconsin.

Oh I agree, but he seems to fit the overall scheme of what Doeren wants his offense to look like.

"Eventually, I would like to get a guy like Jordan here that makes it a dual-threat offense. It may not happen in year one, but I do believe in what Wisconsin did on offense, being able to run the football to win the game, and play-action and use the screen game with the tight ends, but I also believe in what we did at Northern, spreading it out.

"The best way to explain what we did there was a blend of Oregon and Wisconsin. We could go fast, we could spread you out, we could run our quarterback, but we could turn around and run power zone and stretch and play-action you too. I really liked that form of offense."

    From Wikipedia:

"While at Purdue, Chaney was known as a spread offense guy. When Urban Meyer took his first coaching job at Bowling Green, he sought advice from several of the best coaches using the spread offense. One of those guys was Jim Chaney.[4] But spending a few years in the NFL Chaney gained a new found appreciation for the pro-style offense.[5] When Chaney came to Tennessee he and Kiffin fielded a very pro-style offense, very similar to what Kiffin used at USC. Tennessee currently runs a modified pro-style attack that still relies heavily on the pass game. While at Purdue, Chaney's offense was one of the most potent in the country.[6] He coached future NFL greats, most notably Drew Brees, who was drafted in the second round of the NFL draft in 2001."

I like it. Not sure if we'll have the personnel to run up the score like that next year though.

Tennessee OC Jim Chaney was set to interview in Raleigh today. Here's some info on him from the UT website..

Chaney, 49, arrived in Knoxville in 2009 from the NFL ranks, having spent the three previous seasons as an assistant coach for the St. Louis Rams. The majority of Chaney's coaching experience, however, comes from the collegiate ranks. His coaching and recruiting turns at Purdue, Wyoming and Cal State Fullerton made him the perfect fit for Tennessee.

Chaney spent all three years in St. Louis coaching the offensive line before adding tight ends to his assignment sheet in 2008. During the 2007 campaign, Chaney helped coach an offensive line that led running back Steven Jackson to his third consecutive 1,000-yard season.

Possessing one of college football's best offensive minds, Chaney helped the Boilermakers lead the Big Ten in passing offense five times and total offense three.

Purdue was ranked in the top 10 in the nation in total offense in six seasons, including 2000, when the Boilermakers ranked fourth.

Chaney served as the offensive coordinator at Purdue from 1997-2005.

Quarterback Drew Brees, a second-round draft pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2001, was the NCAA total offense champion in 2000, averaging 349.1 yards per game, and received the Maxwell Award as the nation's outstanding player. Tim Stratton received the inaugural John Mackey Award as the nation's best tight end in 2000.

More importantly, the 2000 combination of Chaney and Brees under head coach Joe Tiller led Purdue to its first Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl berth in 33 years.

From 1997-2001, Chaney served as recruiting coordinator and helped the Boilermakers sign some of the country's top high school talent. The 1998 class was ranked second in the Big Ten and 11th nationally. Each of Chaney's last five classes was in the top 30 nationally.
