It's going to affect everyone, including yours. This of course is not the time and place so I will be brief on my soapbox, but things are going to happen that will have a significant effect on the economy. If govt. does not shrink, we will go in default. Moodys is about ready to pull the trigger. If we cut govt. spending, we will slide into a recession until the private sector picks it up, IMHTHO the perferable way. Unfortunately, we are on the spending track with too many freebies out there. When our bonds get downgraded, our borrowing costs go up and either there will be more taxes, or the govt. will have to lay off. You saw what happened with Greece. If we act now and suffer some immediate pain, then we will gain in the long run. It's pretty simple math.

Gotcha. Every industry is different and I honestly know nothing about industries outside of the one I work in. I hope it turns around for everyone.

You are talking about hourly people with no real skills except installing HVAC systems. The housing industry is still trying to recover. There is more competition between sub-contractors than I have ever seen. Builders are now switching companies to save $50 on a home being built. Their profit margins are smaller, but subs pay the price...and the buyer. I own a sub-contracting business. 4 years ago, I had 2 full-time employees and 14 custom builders using my services. Today, it's me, a part-time helper when I need him, and 2 builders using me full-time, 1-2 part-time....when they build a home. And, I've had to cut my prices to keep what I have. My bills didn't go down or disappear (truck payment, gas, insurance, cell phone, materials), just my income and profit margins. Have had to dip into personal savings several times to stay afloat. More people looking for jobs due to lay-offs, companies going out of business. Less jobs/work available due to economy. You do the math.
And yet, this last bill to "save" us from the fiscal cliff, had billions in pork in it. It's in today's N & O, on the front page. Our elected officials don't give a D*mn about Americans in general. Even my wife is ready to leave the country, as she fears it's going to get worse, and we are both in our fifties. She says if we're going to die, we may as well be in a warm climate we love, far south of here. :-)

Are the 7 people out of work unable to find hourly contract work? I am not trying to be a smart*ss, just wondering if they are in a situation where they have to work for a company or be completely unable to find a paycheck?

Yep. Recession coming.

A guy I know just folded his heating and air company. Had 7 employees. It was either supply insurance for everyone at 40k per year or pay a penalty of 20k+ for not offering insurance. He couldn't afford either, so he's gone to work for someone else, and 7 people are now out of work. And, this is just the beginning.

Hope all the people that voted for the guy are enjoying their tax hike and Obmacare fee on the next paycheck. The rich are now "paying their fair share" according to the campaign rhetoric. Did anyone really beleive they could do any revenue increase without taxing the critical masses? Hilarious and sad all in one thought. The pork in the bill was ridiculous, especially the wind power one. Now let's see how serious the other side get's about spending cuts because the revenue side is settled...or is it? Once liberty slips on a slope, the grip is always compromised on each subsequent step due to the shoes of freedom being clogged by bureaucratic and class warefare mud.
