    The thing is...who cares!

If State would have won I would have been happy but I would not have cared what Fringers do. Since State loss I am extremely disappointed but I still do not care what Fringers do.

I just dont understand why you let them drive you crazy no matter who you pull for.

Playing Duke at home and playing MD at Maryland are two different things. Maryland isn't Duke but on the other hand, they do have matchups that could get State into some foul trouble. Duke was unable to do that but Maryland certainly has a chance to do that and then State's depth will even things up.

And the Maryland home court advantage is a very real thing. They don't have to travel. State did have to travel. Plus traveling midweek is always a factor. I think traveling midweek is harder on the players than traveling for a weekend game. Maryland's fans are like State's. Loud and close to the action. They actually showed up in the ESPN best home courts list I posted earlier.

Exactly. But we have to balance that with a long and grueling season. We can't get burned out. Then it will just go downhill. Hopefully we have a few easy games we can cruise through.

We should play EVERY game like we did Duke. HARD! Is that on the players or the coaches?

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Jan 16, 2013

I think the Duke win could be a turning point for us. It showed us we could play with ANYONE if we play our best for the full 40 minutes. Now we can follow that up in one of two ways:

    1) Come out inspired, because we know we can, and we know we will have to in order to win at Maryland, or
    2) Come out lackadaisical, and wait until Maryland punches us in the mouth before we decide to play.

I believe we came out slow against BC and GT because we were overconfident and thought they would be easy wins. But against Duke, we know that wasn't the case, and we came out like gangbusters.

I think we know we have to come out like gangbusters tonight against Maryland, too. So I expect we will. This ain't BC or GT.

    But it's no Duke, either.

Your last sentence said it. In our first 2 conference games, we DID play down to our opponents level until late in the game. Then we picked it up and won. Barely at BC. I'm afraid if we do that tonight, or any other night, it's gonna come back to bite us in the behind.

You do realize that State didn't invent the concept of a hangover game, right?

Most teams suffer an emotional letdown after a high-energy, emotional win.

The difference in those years is that when State won the big game, they were still a bad-to-mediocre team. They had a hangover AND they were just not very good.

This year, it's pretty clear that we're a very good team. Now we may still suffer from a hangover (who knows?) but we won't lose because we're a bad team.

Am I the only State fan that isn't very worried about this game? I want it just as much as I wanted the Duke win. But I think it will be an easier win for us. So I'm just not all that worried. Of course we can lose. We can lose any game on our schedule if we don't show up. But I think if we play our game (not over our heads, but not down to the competition, either) I think we win this one fairly easily.

Serious question -- who won this game last season?

I'm not as concerned about the last 12 as I am last YEAR. Different coaching staffs and different players have come and gone since 1992. What I'm more concerned with is how did THESE players and THIS coaching staff do last year. What Les Robinson and Herb did is irrelevant.

One final point re rebound margin: The margin for the first 3 games of conference play is +2.67 for maryland.....
    NCSU is +2.0 in conf.

Pretty much a wash thus far, between them.

Which is exactly the point I was alluding to. Against decent competition they averaged 25 points per game less, 2 fewer rebounds per game, and saw a 15% decrease in FG%. While there isn't a huge change in the rebounding stat, you'll get your share of rebounds when you shoot that poorly.

    Dead meat? Hardly.

However, this is the statistic that has bothered me the most, their offensive rebounding in particular. The more dominant they are on the boards, the fewer chances we'll have to get out in transition against them (our strength, their weakness). It's important to note though that they have been able to pad their stats against vastly inferior opposition. Against decent competition they haven't faired all that well statistically (also happen to be their only losses)...

Season Avg: Points: 74.8 Rebounds: 43 FG: 48.3%

    KY - Points: 69 Rebounding: 44 (+12) FG: 33.3%

    FSU - Points: 62 Rebounding: 39 (+3) FG: 36.7%

    Miami - Points: 47 Rebounding: 41 (+4) FG: 31.6%

It's noteworthy that they only scored 69 points against KY despite having 19 more shots, and still lost.

At least Maryland's replacements in the ACC are really bringing something to the conference. Take note of the top 25 teams in the AP poll and the ACC (including its incoming members) make up 25% of the poll.

If you thought the ACC didn't care about MD, you'll be even more unhappy in the Big Ten. They all have rivalries that have been going on for years and years. MD will be to the Big Ten what Boston College is to the ACC. A game that no one cares about and fills time between the games with Duke and UNC. Only now, you'll be Ohio State and Michigan's afterthought.

You will have company though with f'in Rutgers.

38, 38 , 39, and 44. The four highest rebound totals allowed by maryland this year. When did each occur? The first 38 was in the opening loss to kentucky. The next three are the first 3 games in conference play.

The significance should be obvious, re the creampuff pre-conf schedule referenced above.

The new ACC is nothing like the old ACC. However, I think it is much too early to be predicting the demise of the ACC. Maryland did what they thought was best for them financially. Their financial hardships are well known, but more money from the new conference will not improve their standings in football nor basketball.

No Problem, but when Maryland leaves so does other teams and the ACC will be the Big East.
You might hate Maryland but the ACC needs them badly. Should have treated them better. I would love to have seen Swofford's face when he heard the news Maryland was leaving.
I'm sure Swofford will give himself a huge raise before destroying the ACC.

I like stats when talking about FT, shooting percentage and stuff, but when it comes to stuff like how many times did we win on a full moon, and do we win more in the rain I throw stats out the window. It's mostly bookies that like that stuff and use it. The team that wins tonight will be the one that fights harder and play's better. I GO with my PACK! They will edge it out.

I have shown you that State has historically suffered the hangover effect after wins over Duke or UNC, year after year despite changes in coaching and players. So, yes, there is an obvious trend here, and you can't deny it. I've also showed you that State has historically suffered against Maryland despite changes in coaches and players. Now, look, I hope they give Maryland a nice bon voyage present of a major ***-kicking, but to deny that there is no such thing as a hangover effect and that State seems to succumb to it more often than not is completely ridiculous.

Problem is...Gary Williams is not coaching.

BTW - Why is Roy Williams(has to be the worst coach but with the greatest talent) in the Hall of Fame while Gary is not? I guess its another reason why Maryland wants to leave the ACC. Maryland is the Rodney Dangerfield of the ACC.

...and this statistic was formulated based upon play against one of the softest schedules of any major school in the nation. Of course maryland "can" win any given game on any given day... just as can the lowly citadel. But "should" is another thing entirely. Conference play has revealed some things about the "real" maryland.... and alot of it ain't pretty.

I can understand a "fan" having major quibbles with his team when his team is not playing well, and the occssional gripe even when his team is playing quite well.

BUT... when a supposed "fan" is always the first to find the negative in a veritable sea of posititives, he might just as well go on over and wave the flag for the opposition.

Then again.... I guess that is precisely the purpose, in this case.
