Exactly -- the way Carolina is with Duke. And the way Carolina was with beating State in football this year. They won their Superbowl.

When you exit from the dance, you hang your hat on your other achievements. Beating your rivals counts. We know how important that is to Carolina, too, because you guys are constantly reminding us how long the streak was.

Just don't insult anyone's intelligence by pretending it is any different for you.

Exactly. I'm saying, to some it is a successful season because at the end it, that's what you'll be hanging your hat on if things go south in the tournament. Why? Because beating your big brothers is always something to talk about.

Oh, it's a big deal to beat your rivals. You guys jump through bonfires on Franklin Street whenever you beat Duke (regardless of the rankings). No one ever said it wasn't important. But it's not worthy of rushing the court when they're barely getting poll votes, much less ranked. And beating a bad UNC team does not make this a successful season.

Don't kid yourself, state fan, if you say beating unc and duke isn't a big deal. You've been the doormat in this state for over 30 years now, so it is a big deal. It's just like state football. You're more interested in beating unc than anything else.

How can we know if it is a successful season when there are 11 more conference games, then the ACC tournament, then the NCAA tournament, left to be played?

Please stop this childish line of questioning. Beating Carolina and/or Duke does not a successful season make.

Well, considering all the hype, it's hard not to want an ACC championship and/or Final Four trip. I don't know, nut - I never bought into the hype, so I just want to see continuing progress, something I think we're seeing. Finishing near the top of the ACC standings, a good showing in the tournament, and a return to the Sweet 16 would satisfy me. Like TB said, recruit, recruit, recruit.

    Back on topic-

No, beating 1 top ranked team and 1 also ran, is NOT indicative of a "successful season".

alas, losing to the latter team (the also ran one), would have been beyond embarrassing.

    Go Pack!

If all players had his heart, desire, hustle, and fortitude...your guys could possibly be one of the best teams out there. CJL could be a top draftee if he can hold his mental state in tact. He's the quickest player off of the dribble that I've seen in a long time. He is multi-talented TB. No one his size can move and dribble the ball like he has shown this season. State has talent. It's all about intensity. State let up and got cocky last night against Roy and his boys after the 1st half. A team this good needs to go for the jugular. Fire down.

I stated tonight that NC State's starting 5 are the best in the Country. I am a little biased in that the top ESPN guys influenced me to a degree. But, I saw how they destoyed UNC in the 1st half made me believe this. There are strong. Leslie needs to keep his head on straight...one game at a time. Howell will give his double's each night out. He's the glue for State.

You're right Battling. This teaches us what experince can do for any team. It takes these young guys 18-22 to learn this game. Larranaga is a tough and crusty coach. He gets as much out of his players as well as any out there. They will never quit on him. I like to watch coaches on the bench during the game and time-outs. I read how players respond. He and Coach K have total attention of players. Unlike Roy.

True....& Miami has a lot of experience on that team. 5 of their top 6 players are seniors.

Agreed 100%, TBK! Some wins are bigger than others but the name of the game is winning championships.

That's why Duke grew up since the Miami loss. Coach K had these guys playing with intensity almost throughout yesterday. State has talent with 5-7 guys. Not much of a bench. Roy is playing more people that will help on down the one. Miami is doing the same. They like to play 9-10 guys. It pays off. Experience is the key for these young pups. A couple of minutes here and there pays off.

To answer the question, THIS win and the DUKE win (alone) will not make this a successful season for State. Obviously, ending a 13 game losing streak to your most bitter rival is a good thing. So is beating the #1 team in the nation. Those things will contribute to what will hopefully end up a successful season for State.

I know that doesn't fit the agenda of those with superiority complexes that need to hear that beating their team is what defines a successful season for others. But sorry, that's not how it works.

Agreed, Hokie! Beating Duke & UNC in the same season is impressive & they have the talent to go deep in the tourney. Just need to keep playing hard for 40 min. & work as a team, play smart basketball & the 'Pack will be fine.

State has shown that they have the talent to go deep. It isn't over until March though. To beat these two teams makes a statement. They still need intensity for an entire game. They and not many other teams in the ACC has done this thus far. Successful season? Winning either the ACC out-right or the ACC tourney. Then they will get a great bid in the NCAA's.

Dont think so,more road victories, titles and banners for the rafters would be successful enough.Beating rat and roy was quite nice though!

Playing mostly with 6-7 guys, State has been impressive when they play 40 minutes of basketball. CJ played up to his potential last night. Howell is going to give you total energy each time out. He's the glue.

    Tournament as championship

The ACC is unique in the fact that it is the only Division I college basketball conference that does not recognize a regular season title. This is because of the fact that in the days where only one school made the NCAA tournament per league, the ACC representative was determined by the conference tournament, rather than the regular season as other leagues did. Therefore, the league eliminated the regular season title in 1961 and has chosen to solely recognize the winner of the ACC tournament as the league champion ever since. Fans and media do sometimes claim a regular-season title for the team that finishes first, but these titles are unofficial and carry no reward other than the top seed in the ACC tournament.

"Notably, all champions after 1961 are considered unofficial by the conference, as the ACC elected to eliminate the regular season title following that season. Since then, the conference's bylaws have stated the sole champion is the winner of the ACC Tournament, a rule that remains in place to this day. The conference's automatic NCAA berth is reserved for the winner of the ACC Tournament at the end of the season."

I'm sick and tired of having to post this ! It only means more to the ones that don't know the facts.

It's successful as compared to recent past. (5-10 years or more)

BTW gamnell, you can only WIN the ACC by WINNING the ACC Tournament. It would be nice to have the #1 seed or not have to play on Thursday.

I think a successful season for State would be:

    1. Winning the ACC and/or
    2. Winning the ACC Tournament and/or
    3. Going deep in the NCAA's

So far they have had success, but they still have room to improve.
