Reality Check for UNC trolls tonight

RE: Reality Check for UNC trolls tonight

Points is all that matters. You have to score more than you opponents in order to win. You can do this by scoring a lot of point (offense) or preventing you opponents from scoring a lot of points (defense). Either way, losing you fourth leading score is going to hurt more that your 9th leading scorer unless that player is a defensive stopper.

But an individual player can be more important to a team than another player even if he scores fewer ppg. Ever hear of Dennis Rodman?

True. Rodman was an outstanding rebounder and defensive stopper. He had a big effect in preventing the other team from scoring more points that his team, as I alluded to in my post.

But if a players is such a defensive force he is more likely that not to be a starter and/or play more that 12 or 18 minutes a game.

What we were discussing here is the effect of the player rotations when you lose key reserves. At least that is what I was discussing.

You implied McDonald was more valuable than Hairston because he scores more points per game. I responded with Dennis Rodman.

Dennis Rodman plays for Carolina. Which "basketball for dummies" edition are you reading? Must have mixed the chapters up! Talk to your cheer card coach!

"All my fellow Duke fans agree Hairston is the guy that sees the floor for Duke that we could do without. He is a great kid and hustles every play, but his skill set and shot selection leave you desiring more."

That doesn't make him less valuable than McDonald, sorry.

We're discussing the importance of defense and rebounding in assessing the value of a basketball player to his team. It is not a Carolina-only discussion.
