We're discussing the importance of defense and rebounding in assessing the value of a basketball player to his team. It is not a Carolina-only discussion.

That doesn't make him less valuable than McDonald, sorry.

Dennis Rodman plays for Carolina. Which "basketball for dummies" edition are you reading? Must have mixed the chapters up! Talk to your cheer card coach!

You implied McDonald was more valuable than Hairston because he scores more points per game. I responded with Dennis Rodman.

  • The1 Jan 30, 2013

    View quoted thread

True. Rodman was an outstanding rebounder and defensive stopper. He had a big effect in preventing the other team from scoring more points that his team, as I alluded to in my post.

But if a players is such a defensive force he is more likely that not to be a starter and/or play more that 12 or 18 minutes a game.

What we were discussing here is the effect of the player rotations when you lose key reserves. At least that is what I was discussing.

Another one that doesn't care about defense. No wonder why you're all Roy fans.

Please don't confuse hybrid! He's too young to get any of this! He has to check with his cheer card leader before he can respond!

But an individual player can be more important to a team than another player even if he scores fewer ppg. Ever hear of Dennis Rodman?

  • The1 Jan 30, 2013

    View quoted thread

Points is all that matters. You have to score more than you opponents in order to win. You can do this by scoring a lot of point (offense) or preventing you opponents from scoring a lot of points (defense). Either way, losing you fourth leading score is going to hurt more that your 9th leading scorer unless that player is a defensive stopper.

  • 903 mens national championships Jan 30, 2013

Of course, ppg is all that matters in basketball. Defense and rebounding are immaterial.

  • The1 Jan 30, 2013

    View quoted thread

You do have a valid point. A player whos averages 12 mins/game and scores only 1.9 pts/game (Hairston, the 9th leading scorer on the team) would not affect the rotation as much as a player who plays 18 mins/game and averages 8.4 pts/game (McDonald, the fourth leading scorer on the team).

Less McDonald minutes = more Barnes/Bullock/Hairston minutes in 2012 and Bullock/Hairston in 2013. Classic case of addition by subtraction.

Yes, I've seen enough of him to unfortunately agree. His value to the team is to add physicality to a game where Coach K is trying to manipulate the refs to call a game in a way that gives Duke an advantage over the opponent on the foul count. And he also takes pressure off the other bigs on defense so they don't get in foul trouble as quickly.

What he adds in that capacity is offset by his ineffective play on the offensive end.

  • The1 Jan 30, 2013

Regardless, the loss of McDonald affects the substitution pattern. You apparently believe that if Hairston was injured, the team would not be affected.

  • blueduke4 Jan 30, 2013

Gotcha there bud. All my fellow Duke fans agree Hairston is the guy that sees the floor for Duke that we could do without. He is a great kid and hustles every play, but his skill set and shot selection leave you desiring more.

Yes he does. It affects his substition pattern. So you are saying that the dook is not a better team when Hairston is healthy?

Whether he plays or not, Duke runs the same things on offense and defense. It's a different story when Kelly is out. Does Roy make adjustments based on the availability of the Dancin' Machine?

Do you honestly think McDonald was any kind of factor on a team that had Zeller, Henson, McAdoo, Barnes, etc.? That's like saying Duke is only a good team when Josh Hairston is healthy.

I don't know when Kelly was injured?

UNC lost McDonald before the season started.

    Was Kelly hurt then?

You don't even know when Ryan Kelly was injured. Just stick to whining about how 1/2 of UNC's preseason national championship team was unavailable but 4 projected 1st rounders couldn't get past the elite 8.

Funny, how UNCheat injuries are always key to losses and Kyrie coming back had no effect on Duke or was not allowed to have any effect because he was supposedly 100% healthy.

Time to face the facts....NC State just isn't that good. They are able to get up for their superbowl wins, but that's it. They'll probably make it to the NCAA tournament, lose in the first round, and throw a parade.

State looked terrible without 1 player. No team should depend so much on 1. And all we hear about is how great those MCDs are....Lewis and Purvis. they showed squat tonight...lolololol!

I do hope Lo is all right on a serious note. Never like to see any players get injured. PJ was a scary deal.

Hope Zos injury isnt bad, definately need him for the Miami game. Also hope PJ is ok. Regardless of who you call your team the injury to Hairston was a scary one. And losing PJ is equivalent to Kelly for Duke and Brown for State.

Props to Virginia for playing their game and controlling the tempo. Although the job was easier without Zo at the point, the one good thing I take away from this is that Lewis got some valuable PT and that could benefit us long-term.
Overall a disappointing showing and another bullet in the gun of the ABSers.
