Having to filter through all the garbage on these boards is the exact reason I rarely come here anymore and hardly post. So while you two don't mind simply skimming over the junk, some people would prefer to not have to scroll through 3 post to read 1 out of.

And exactly what the OP has stated about the "few serious posters" has happened on a free forum I made last year. There's only 4 maybe 5 of us posting, but the quality of conversation is great. We don't berate each other incessantly...we talk sports. Mild smack talk is fine, nothing wrong with it.

And we have actual moderators...0 tolerance for trolling.

The problem is one fan base starts on another and then when it is turned around the starting base gets upset.

Example is how my fellow wolfpack fans wrote numerous threads deriding Carolina when they were losing

Now the same fans are crying because they are doing it to us as we continue to lose ACC games

If everyone would just use moderation in the ribbing it would be all right. Also you cannot get mad when it comes back at you like my fellow wolfpack fans have done lately. We must grow up

I think it is time to drop this silly thread and focus on our big game vs Duke

A loss here will crush any hope we had of a good season with a lot of talent

  • jacamoe Feb 5, 2013

I don't mind the human nature of "ribbing" the opponent, however I believe we should leave personal attacks out of it. I do not like how fans of all teams "clutter" up a site over and over and over with "junk" responses and Posts. I think yes, just ignore them by my own accord , but also think on each thread a poster should only get so many cracks at it. Limits. Just my opinion, but it has kind of run me out with all the Tarheels on the State page or vise verse, and yes blue devils are doing it too. Like I said, I'm a big boy and can handle it , but too much is too much. Keep it real , as they say.

So let me understand....you have just 96 posts in about 2 years and you are complaining about other folks and putting in a new system? ROFL.....either you are lying and still use the other name (TN in NC) or you are someone that we all need to ignore and if you are not happy then leave. Heck.....packisback joined a couple of weeks ago and had almost 70 posts in a day or so.
You are the joke here and why don't you make a "feash start" as you say and go to Tzoo forum and just leave us good serious sports poster alone!

Just think about it! You, your numerous entities and all your like-minded best

Yeah, I could move on and leave you here, old friend. That way, I could make a fresh start and go back to using the original username I've had since 2006.

What on earth are you talking about? "User experience? Maybe your "user experience" but I wouldn't be trying to speak for everyone like you are trying to do. Get some empirical data under your belt and then speak in your broad generalizations. Besides, get the ignore button feature and then the trolls just change up their name every 24 hours.

P.s. My "user experience" just went down 75% after reading your post. Shame on you

It wouldn't require any monitoring by WRAL at all.

For example, each poster would have an "ignore poster" button by their name just like there's a "quote" button. And each user would have a list in their account settings showing who is ignored and the option to un-ignore them.

Or, on some forums, just the ignored posters name shows in a thread when they post.. with, like.. "you are ignoring this poster" in place of what they wrote.

True, it's WRAL's forum.. and run how they want.. but it'd be foolish to let views/activity/posters be vastly reduced just for the sake of letting trolls not be ignored.

An analogy would be that trolls are kind of like criminals that are hanging out in a store. Yes, your store may be full, but it's a negative because they're criminals, and they're keeping potentially valuable good customers away.

More good posters drawn in because they can blacklist trolls if need be would be a positive for WRAL.

"User experience" is a big thing on the web. Sites work very hard to make their "user experience" better so people keep coming back for more. Here that's not happening. And the user experience is so poor it drives people away.

I don't think WRAL is willing to put the time in to monitor. They have in the past said that they want freedom of the posters to interact with each other. I think that's what makes this site successful. However, it's just my opinion. I think that's the way they want to run this site, and it is their site.
BTW, It's strange none of the other tv stations have a similar site. So, this is really the only place to express your view points, freely. I also like the live chat on game day.

Let's face these truths. No one is calling for anyone to be banned. No one is saying "smack talk" is trolling.

There's a big difference between creative smack and unoriginal, brainless and excessive troll posts.

I cannot understand why anyone but a troll [do not mean you cussmeout] would have a problem with people having a little control over their user experience.

The control would lead to more legit posters and a better experience for all except the trolls, who would either end up only talking to themselves, or mend their ways.

No bans, just blocks when someone feels another poster's input is not worth scrolling through. Personally, I'd prefer one page of good posts over five filled with 80% BS every time. Your mileage may vary.

Let's face the truth. People come here because they can post what they want. They enjoy posting their "smack talk." If the smack talk didn't exist, then this forum wouldn't exist. Just an example, go to this forum and see how successful it is. It was set up by Tizu for the purpose of discussing sports without the insults and so called "smack talk." As you can see there is only 3 or 4 regular people posting there. The best way is to ignore the trolls. If you concerned because someone is slamming your school, then clean up your own troll sheet. I don't post a lot here anymore, but I don't want to see this forum shut down.
This is Tizu's site. I'm sure you'll be welcome there. I don't think there are any Carolina fans there.

All forums have this problem to varying degrees. Moderated forums obviously have a way to mitigate this situation. As a free wide open unmoderated forum, this forum will run rampant with trolls, no way around it. The best thing is to ignore them, but that option never seems to work.

You're missing the point. Trolls can talk for free in the smack talk forums. And since serious posters get their money back, they talk for free everywhere else. It's only the trolls who have to pay if they want to hijack serious threads.

I think some are missing the point of not having to click through several pages to see one page worth of serious dialog.

An ignore function PREVENTS THE POSTS FROM SHOWING.
It significantly REDUCES THE NUMBER OF PAGES YOU HAVE TO CLICK THROUGH
    to read legit posts.

Sure, I know how to not read posts, but it's a huge waste of time to have to continually click to the next page to see the one decent comment that's on it.

It's not about not reading the trolls, it's about time and continuity. It's also about drawing in more new or returning legitimate posters who don't bother contributing now because of the excessive trolling.

Maybe some of you have all day to click through 10 pages of posts in order to read the half page of non-troll posts, but not me, and I suspect there are many in the same situation.

It's a great idea, but I'm not sure if it would work. There are a number of posters I just don't read, especially in the Smack Talk Forum, because of the garbage they post. The Trolls exist in all fan bases, they seem to be equal opportunity offenders.
