What does State need to do in order to win on the road at Duke this week?

You are right there is no way of telling what happens in the big dance. Duke had plenty of experience last year and lost to Lehigh, NC State barely made it in and went to the Sweet 16. We disagree on this year's Miami team but we shall see

They could, especially if they got into an easier bracket, but I just don't see it. Not sure how many of those guys have tournamnet experience. It seems to me that the ACC is a little weak this year and teams that don't have tournament experience may struggle in the NCAA's, but who knows.

While I respect others opinions, Miami is a team that may go a long way this year.

Miami is definitely more consistent than State or Duke, but I see Miami as having peaked and will fizzle out. Miami is well coached, but I don't see them as having the talent level to compete night after night against quality teams that will surely (I hope...) get better.

State needs to get Miami to play the game for them.

State needs to make a committment as a team to play like a team day in and day out. They have improved on this since the beginning of the season, but they're not where they need to be yet. If they don't make this commitment, it's an early exit in the NCAA's. If they do, it's show time!

Duke seems to be playing better currently and state seems to be slipping, not to say they wont go farther in the tourney. Just an assessment.

They'll need divine intervention to win at Duke.

Seriously, I like State's comeback this year, but this ain't gonna happen.

State will be motivated for sure. THey have played up, and down, to their opponents all season. Also coming off 2 losses straight, they really need a win and 3 in a row is nearing disaster for this team. Gonna be a tough, closesly contested game. If state gets into a little foul trouble Duke will take it, otherwise it will probably come right down to the wire and I just cant call it. State has not been good at closing out tight games thus far though...

I agree with your assessment of Gottfried, I don't think he is an X and O type guy. However Lewis played well against a very good Miami team. The question is how well will he play once there is scouting material out on him. The big guy needs some work.

That's funny, Miami has a short guard.

Tyler Lewis... might as well get the starting PG off Broughton High School JV team.

  • BlueDevils00 Feb 4, 2013

Tyler Lewis... lol... I guess everybody deserves a shot now. Let's let the little 9yr old have a crack at the starting PG spot. He reminds me of that kid in high school that was at every 6am workout, first to finish in sprints, always had the perfect answer for coach's question, but simply wasnt a very good basketball player. He'd always make the team, 12th man, never get any playing time except for blowouts, where he'd quickly turn the ball over 3 times and embarass himself.

Yeah, lets let Tyler Lewis play PG. Let's also let Jordan VanderSLOOT have the starting Center position.

Gott, Gottfried is one heckuva coach!

Worst X and O coach in the ACC. Can't win a close game unless the other team has injury problems.

agreed... at least 3 guys playing (maybe a 4th) for State still have a bad taste in their mouth after letting a 20 point lead with roughly 10 mins to go slip away.... last year when playing @ cameron... State DEFINITELY wants revenge for that.

CJL wants this one BADLY!!! he had half a dozen blocks the last time he played in cameron.

I don't think Brown represents a 20 point swing. 100% he represents one of the best scoring options on the team, I seriously doubt he will be 100% on Thursday. Duke at Cameron is a tough game no matter the circumstances. Factor in revenge in your predictions.

A zone is about ball movement to negate any tall guards, and Duke is one of the best in the country in moving the ball via the pass vs dribbling. A zone will be ineffective against Duke. State will need to play tough non physical defense against Duke, very difficult to do. Any team that plays physically against Duke at Cameron gets into foul trouble fairly quickly, just the way it is.

If Brown plays, State wins by 10. If Brown does not play, Dook wins by 10+.

State's guards aren't as short and easy to shoot over as FSU's... IF Zo plays.

if Zo doesn't play, then yes, someone will be shooting over Tyler Lewis.

play some zone - Duke has excellent 3 point shooters and would love to see the zone
protect the ball - any team not protecting the ball will lose
make shots (particularly the chippies) - any team not making shots will lose
RUN - Agreed must control the tempo, very important
play very solid D and REBOUND - Correct Defense and Rebounding are key.

Duke in Cameron will be tough for NC State, with or without Brown. If Lewis has to play, the Pack will have 3 freshmen visiting Cameron for the first time. Factor in that Duke is playing to stay within 2 games of Miami and this is a tough win for State. I think State fans have resigned themselves to a loss, so a win will be big indeed. I love college basketball.

I do think the refs will have a role in whether or not State can win. If the refs "let them play," State has a better chance. I'm not saying the refs are biased against State, but State has a more physical style at times and that can lead to more fouls. State has to adjust to ref's that are less lenient. As long as the referees are consistent, I don't care if they call the small stuff.

I'm sure Coach K will try to rack up up fouls on Leslie and Howell so I anticipate Plumlee getting the ball inside a lot the first half. I think this will pose a huge problem for State either because 1. State will actually rack up a lot of fouls or 2. Plumlee will score at will. Howell and Leslie have to step it up or State will lose 3 in a row. It would be nice if Brown is back so we can have a fast transition offense. We'll see. Should be exciting.
