Very true Tar Heels Victory. I would hate to see any player ruin his chances to reach his dream, and continue playing.

Well darn, what does that say about UNC when a team comes out lethargic and builds a 28 point lead on them. So Duke and UNC both lost to a lethargic team, well thats real good news for State, if they can beat them playing lethargic they will kill them when the play a complete game.

Plus, when a player is out for an extended period of time, there has to be a little concern regarding team chemistry.

If he comes back, I hope he does not re-injure his foot. Had the injury not been to the same foot as before, it would not be as risky for him to return at all this season.

Yep...one of the all-time ACC greats. He was deadly.

"During the 1988-89 season, Price became the second player, after Larry Bird, to join the NBA's 50-40-90 Club for those who shot at least 40% from three-point range, at least 50% from the field and at least 90% from the free throw line in a single season, and is still one of only five players to have ever done this while also achieving the NBA league minimum number of makes in each category." Wiki

Deadly! Not bad for a guy who was considered too slow & too small to play.

Look at what Duke has done with giving a few players more playing time since Kelly went out. Overall, Duke has improved. Duke will be tourney ready when Kelly is back. Loads of experience for others gave Duke more depth.

It always looked like Price should be out-manned but he would come away with the better performance and more often than not the "W" also.

Agreed....credit to State for coming back like they did. ACC Tourney should be very entertaining this year.

^^^^ Lewis is playing solid basketball. He was 4-8 FG's. 5-5 FT's. 6 assists. 2 steals. Who on this team had his stats last evening? He should have been playing more before Brown got hurt IMHO.

Tyler Lewis was very impressive. He reminds me of Mark Price, very heady and steady.

Yes, by the end of the game there was near parity in most stats.... however, duke hit 10 threes.... most in the first half shooting 60+ percent... and state hit 4 in the game..... so that first half rain of threes was also significant, in addition to the frees you mention, though the three point %s were essentially a wash.

  • VT1994Hokie Feb 8, 2013

    Duke shot 54% FG's. FT's 78%. 3pt 42%. TO's 8. Rb's 33.

State shot FG's 53%. FT's 58%. 3pt 44%. Rb's 31. Free throws was the difference. State did outscore Duke by 8 in the 2nd half. Like I've stated earlier on a few State never gave up nor quit playing. Down by 21 at the half, and some would have folded.

  • barthc98 Feb 8, 2013

Duke deserved the win last night.... heck, they couldn't miss the bucket in the first half. And many of the threes they made were NOT "free look" shots... I saw several off-balance and in motion threes... they just all went. This was not defensive weakness for the greatest part IMO. I do not believe that Duke would have lost to any team in the country last night given the same shooting accuracy. Sometimes you beat yourself, and sometimes the other team beats you.... I think this loss an example of the latter.

Having said that, I think that the number of teams that could have come back to the extent that we did is very limited. Wedo have a very good team, and in spite of our recent losses I sincerely doubt there is any coach out there that would breath easily at the prospect of a "one and done" with this team at a neutral site. The remainder of our acc schedule looks pretty favorable, and I believe that by acc tournament time we will be well positioned to make a strong run.

Wait a minute, are you saying State actually was able to beat both UNC AND DUKE, in one season???????

How could this happen with the corrupt refs going back to the stone ages? Time for the ACC to find some new refs that understand the mission.

Lol is that all that you took from my post? Please attempt to comprehend and post something logical next time. I was a UNC fan until I paid tuition to State. I still pull for UNC when they aren't playing State. The only reason I mentioned those two schools is because they both have good RPI's and SOS so it looks good on paper.

yea, with Howell in foul trouble, Leslie on plumlee was a disaster...Leslie is possibly one of the worst defenders to ever wear a Pack uniform...Howell can hold his own against plumlee, and he was when he got going in the 2nd half...if the other players gave the effort that Howell and Lewis give, the Pack would be formidable..but with Leslie,Warren and Wood failing on all defensive fronts, State is up against it

^Thank you, I tried expalin ing this to The Old Drink. When you play sloppy, half hearted defense, you end up fouling alot more. Duke, having been beat by state once this season, knew exactly what they needed to do to get this team in trouble. They executed the game plan they drew up magnificently. Not having alot of depth also makes it very hard to play true physical defense, but that is still no excuse for "lazy" play on the def end, as was mentioned by both commentators several times throughout the game. Yes Old Well, I did watch the game tape, and nowhere did I see a blatant conspiracy to hold down a state squad that has not been relevant in 30 years.

there is no State defense, and it will doom them..another reason why they lose close games, they cant stop anyone, or lockdown anyone...Gott needs to recruit some defenders, to go with the scorers

  • SportznutV2.0 Feb 8, 2013

State does not have the depth to play physical defense, it only takes a few calls to get you into foul trouble.

Case in point - First play of the game, Scott Wood plays matador defense and allows Dook player to go right around him. Howell is standing in no man's land, he should have stood there with his hands up or just given up the two points, 1 foul on him is more important that the two points he was giving up.

Every call can be nitpicked and certainly is by a certain triangle school

And as surely as the sun rises in the East....

    LOL!!!!

  • Yeah Man Feb 8, 2013

I'm a state grad and I figured we would lose if we didn't come out strong. Duke shot lights out in the first half and Plumlee is too big and strong down low for Howell. Luckily we made it a good game in the end. Too bad Howell didn't start shooting 10 feet out earlier in the game. That would eventually have brought Plumlee out and he could have dished it off to someone breaking to the basket.

One thing I noticed was that we have a couple of guys that don't like to play as a team. TJ Warren and CJ Leslie seem more concerned about getting to the NBA than they are about winning games as a TEAM in college. Leslie has incredible talent and has gotten better since his freshman year, but he still loves himself. I thought Warren had a good head on his shoulders and would learn from Howell, but it looks like he considers himself better already. Someone needs to break these kids, military style, in the offseason and make them come together as a team.

... agreed, yes! The phantom fouls, the obvious no touch stuff, is a sign of something quite wrong, corruption among the officiating crews. I believe this thing goes way back, problem is that it's rearing it's ugly head so obviously now because STATE is on the rise, the basketball program by defeating Duke & Carolina this season, as well as their preseason ranking, has brought them to prominence, and there exists true hatred out there in all of the wrong places.

Tyler Lewis. That kid is a stud. It may have been "past his bedtime", but he didn't think so, as he did a fantastic job running the point with Brown out. He was not intimidated by Cameron, played well beyond his freshman years, and will be a bright spot for State.

^Thank you wpdh, and that lack of energy and hustle is what costed them so any early fouls, or as i call, stupid fouls. The first play of the game Sulaimn drove right at Howell and drew the foul, so obviously K had game planned to get this state team with little depth in foul trouble, it is called coaching.

I was there, of course there were a couple blown calls both ways, but that happens every game, human eror. From what I witnessed the problem with state was a lack of a sense of urgency and hustle. They seemed uninterested.

I must've missed the "stupid fouls" early... he didn't reach in, while defending 20+ feet from the basket... and he wasn't called for any of those fouls called on 3pt shooters.

nor do I think all the 3pt shots that fouls were called on, were fouls.

    :)

Yep, when you commit alot of stupid fouls early from lack of hustle, it makes it hard to defend in the rest of the game, basketball 101, duh.

  • Wolfpackindahizzy4shizzy Feb 8, 2013

duke was just ^^^on^fire^^^ in the 1st half.

    it happens...

State didn't hedge out on the 3pt shooter well enough in the first half, and plumlee made it physical down low in the 2nd, and the fouls affected State's ability to adequately guard him.
