lack of defense in the 1st half and Dukes unGodly 3 point shooting dug a hole to deep to get out of. Defense shored up in the second half to make it somewhat respectable but going in without Zo and at Duke was a tall order from the start. I dont blame refs, although the flagrent 1 on Howell was questionable. Give credit to Duke for the ability to create the illusion of a foul, even when one doesnt exist. Its not just State that suffers against phantom charging calls, and there are quite a few clips out there that show Dukes Oscar-worthy performances. Should they ever institute a flopping call, K will have to completely revamp is system. Until then, if it aint broke dont fix it.

How is something that actually happened a "conspiracy" in your mind? Do you think they all independently came up with the idea? You don't think they collaborated on it's execution?

Do you think the anger that drove them to such a public display just evaporated following the game? Do you think refs are immune to holding a grudge just like most everyone else in the world does at some point(s)?

Why would a crew of refs officiate a game with the initials on their shoe of a ref that was just punished because of an action he took against former State players?

Why wouldn't the ACC Commish make them remove the initials before they officiated the game? Why weren't they fired for such an unauthorized act? Why do refs get away with doing whatever they want? Wearing those initials was WAY over the line and equated with insubordination against the decision of their superiors, yet they officiate on..

It's time to clean house.. if refs refuse to call the games consistently then they need to be fired and replaced. If they want to snub their noses at a team and their own bosses by wearing initials on their shoe, the next game, and every game thereafter, they attend should be watched from the stands. No excuses. Either start calling games correctly and consistently or find a new job. No one else in any other job [save politics] gets away with such bull, and neither should they.

Except, of course, if they're just a cog in the corrupt wheel of sports betting and big money college sports. Then it all makes sense.

Do we have to whine about the refs after EVERY loss? Really, it's pathetic. The refs did NOT cause State to lose last night. People whining about consistency, blah, blah, blah. It's BASKETBALL. Did y'all just start watching this season? There's never been consistency and there never will. There's always been ticky tack fouls and non-calls and there always will. It's the same in hockey. It's the same in football. It's the same in baseball with the strike zone.... Good teams overcome questionable calls and win games.

  • blueduke4 Feb 8, 2013
    Sports Legend

Furthermore, why would the league want to "keep state down", I would think they would want as many good teams every year, to put more in the tourney, therefore creating more exposure for the acc and creating more revenue, right?

  • blueduke4 Feb 8, 2013

^Wow dude, so what you are saying is that EVERY time a team in the NCAA has considerably more fouls called on them the fix is in? Or is it only happening against state? And if so, why? They havent been relevant for ages.

  • TVs_Deceit Feb 8, 2013

The effect of fouls on Cook and Sula was exponentially less than on Howell.

I'd trade them anytime for two on Plumlee, because that would have actually made a difference in the game, like it did with Howell.

How about the double dribble the ref was looking right at that wasn't called? We could play that game all day.

And no I haven't seen a consistent interpretation of the rules called all year long. When there's a consistent application of the rules among all players in every game then the issue will be non-existent.

The problem is the refs get to decide on a game-to-game basis how the game will be called. And that gives them just enough control to mold the outcome a certain way.

EVERYTHING depends on what the refs decide to call and choose to "see". And that's what's wrong with the whole mess. The refs are providing no consistency and have no accountability for their decisions. They call what they want to call and ignore what they want to ignore. It's as dirty as the rest of the world, certain people get away with certain things while other people don't.

How about the two quick fouls to Cook or Sulaimon.

Or how about Calvin going from one side of the lane to the other for a reverse lay up and not traveling.

So I guess Duke fans should bring up the refs in Raleigh during the first game.

I guess you think that game was called ok.

  • blueduke4 Feb 8, 2013
    Sports Legend

So Sulaimon driving on the first play, wood blowing his assignment, and howell left out to dry defensively and drawing a foul, is a cheap foul now? No, your team plays terrible defense, has all year. Sometimes terrible def leads to alot of fouls, like last night.

  • TVs_Deceit Feb 8, 2013

    View quoted thread

Well, obviously in last night's game, it only started with big Plumlee because big Howell got called for two cheap fouls early in the game that limited his options to guard big Plumlee.

Plumlee could have been called for the same ticky-tack fouls early as well.
But it didn't happen. Did it? Only Howell.

And don't even bother trying to say the refs had no idea how that would affect the game. They knew very well that saddling Howell with two early fouls would give a "big" time advantage to Duke.

  • blueduke4 Feb 8, 2013

First the state fans say there were to many "cheap" fouls called, and now they are saying that there were not enough "cheap" fouls called. Everyone has been clamoring for the acc refs to let the games be a bit more physical, much like the big ten. That starts with the bigs. Then when they do let them play a little you complain.

Yeah, and it's a foul. That's why it needs to be called. It provides an unfair advantage by physically affecting an opposing player. -- aka "a foul".

Why should post players get away it? They're using their bigger bodies to gain an advantage.

Other players can't push off to get a better shot. Why should post players be allowed to? They're pushing the defender back in order to be in position to take a better shot.

A guard can't bump back a defender without getting called. Bigs should get called the same way. Then scoring will be a matter of skill and not just being bigger than the other guy and being able to push him out of the way.

Are you kidding? Bumping defenders backwards is what all post players do in the post.

  • TVs_Deceit Feb 8, 2013

The refs need to start calling fouls committed with a player's backside.

When a big works his way to the basket by backing into a defender it should be a foul. The defender's not allowed to push a player away from the basket, so why is it okay the other way around?

Shaq was one of the worst offenders. He was always allowed to keep bumping defenders backwards until he was in position to score.

Plumlee would have been stretched to get 10 points if he had been called for using his body to bump Howell in order to get in position to score.

Little confused by this game film you keep mentioning. I am sure officials and coaches and players would all change things done during a game if they were permitted to watch a replay and then make a call.

Unfortunately, refs and others do not have that luxury. They make the calls during live action.

You have said a couple of times that you do not believe State lost because of the refs, but your continued responding has me doubting that.

    And that is just sad.

I have much support, many of the unbiased can observe a game properly via the actual game film and see of what I speak, you just care not to try, you're just glad to get a "w" in the record books, understandably. The problem is by ignoring the corruption in the officiating ranks you participate in that corruption, a corruption which demeans the sport and the results.
