Does State have a true Rival?

I keep hearing UNC not our Rival, and seems everyone has one except State. I guess thats ok though. Do you really need to have a Rival? Seems to me our fans get pumped about every game no matter who we play. This really shows in football.

I believe the acc designated Wake Forest as their rival.

Yeah guess the ACC was trying to make one there. Since Wake Forest doesn't have a rival either.

I guess it depends on what you mean by a "true Rival". If a true rivalry is one in which it is the most important game to both sides, I would have to say no. Because then, each school could, by definition, only have one true rival. For Carolina, that rival is Duke. But I'm not aware that anybody was appointed to define what the meaning of "true rival" is.

If a school can have more than one true rival at a time, then there is no question that Carolina and State are true rivals. Just as Michigan and Michigan State are, and Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are, even though Michigan's biggest rival is Ohio State and Oklahoma's is Texas. Those intrastate games are much more intense than most of the games on the schedule of either school. They are more hyped, both in their local media and around the sports bars and water coolers in the area. Of course they are rivalries.

If every school on your schedule is your rival, then no school is your rival. I don't think ECU has a true rival within either its current conference or the one it is going to. But I think if you ask any ECU fan if State is their rival, I think the answer would be yes. I think it's like a Supreme Court Justice said about pornography: I can't define it for you, but I know it when I see it.

When I see Carolina vs State, I know it's a rivalry.
