Try to pay attention for once... the number of free throws ALONE is not and has never been an argument for or against the officiating. It is a simpleton's argument. Someone can look at a stat sheet and point that out.

If the fouls were valid, they were valid. In Carolina games, that's about a 50-50 proposition. Hansbrough travels (not called) and the opponent ends up fouling him. That's bad officiating. That's also not what happened with State-VT.

Dude, my first two points are EXACTLY where there were so many more foul shots. You just don't want to see it.

But you could always list ONE foul call that was not valid? All you did was whine about the number of fouls, and that is NEVER an argument for or against the officiating.

And yet State fans rejected this logic for years when Carolina led the league in free throws.

What's the word again? Ah, yes...hypocrites.

TBK. I agree with your 3rd point. That's all. You don't see anything unless it's your school either. Little VT could have taken State out. See how close it was. I will watch how many times ANY school shoots 43-7 FT's. Heh. Bull Sugar.

Exactly, there were several factors as to why VT was fouling more:

    1) State is the more talented team this year. VT had to foul at times.

    2) We pounded the ball inside on just about every possession. VT shot jumpers and 3-pointers. So we had many more opportunities for fouls.

    3) VT was in foul-mode at the end of regulation and at the end of OT because they were behind.

28 fouls called on VA Tech to 12 called on State. IMO, it makes sense because NC State is flat out the better team and when they are on offense, sometimes the only way to stop them is to foul them. VA Tech, on the other hand, 90% of their offense goes thru a perimeter player.

It's just an example of two teams that play completely different strategies and the one that's more interior-oriented is the one that forces the other team to foul more, simple as that.

Did you notice when Scott was walking toward the free throw circle to shoot those last two free throws, the VT players actually hurried and huddled there inside the key. Scott continued walking and had to wait for them clear out of his way. It looked intentional (not sure if it's against the rules or not). Scott kind of rolled his eyes and you could tell he was annoyed. VT delayed him getting to the line to shoot his free throws. It was absolutely intentional. And he missed the front end.

VT, do you recall any missed foul calls? I don't. When I watched the game on DVR, I was looking for (a) if the calls were valid, and (b) were any calls missed. I watched for both teams. I didn't really see many except a few very obvious bad calls.

Here's the way I see it. State pounded the ball inside on nearly every possession. VT fouled us a LOT in the act of shooting. So we shot a lot of free throws. VT took a lot of jump shots and 3-point attempts. They didn't pound it inside as much. So State didn't foul them as much. And a lot of those fouls that State DID commit were not in the act of shooting. So VT didn't shoot as many free throws.

Then there was the fouling at the end of regulation and at the end of OT because VT was behind.

And VT missed the front end of some 1-and-1's, which means they didn't get their second free throw attempt.

The FT disparity (alone) is not evidence of anything unfair. If anything, I actually thought State should have shot a few more. CJL got hammered on the arm, and the no-call led him to get a technical for letting the ref have an earful.

    Suuuuure you're not.

If Scott "Brick" Wood had simply hit his free throws, then there'd be no need for all the whiners and excuse makers to be crying about "lane violations".

Saturday evening, I watched the game on DVR since I was away from home for much of Saturday afternoon and only caught the tail end of the second half and overtime.

After watching it without the stress of wondering if State would win, I can say that VT just played a good game. I don't think State played a bad game. It looked to me like two pretty good teams going at it out there, with the home team pulling it out.

Sure, there were a couple of head-scratchers of calls/no-calls. But other than the few OBVIOUS bad calls, I think it was pretty well-officiated. I'm not trying to build up VT to make State seem better. But I feel like VT is better than their record, but they just haven't been able to FINISH games.

They sure almost finished this one! I'm not sure I'd want State to play VT again.

We shall recruit a few for next season. Maybe we'll come close to getting 43 attempts at the line. Damm joke.

Well, if your team is ever struggling.....just come and play State. It never fails, everyone plays out of their behinds against us.

I like the energy of the Hokies in the 1st half. We are finally shooting the ball for a change. It has been many games ago since we have shot it decently.

No need to worry. UNC beat them, so State should have no problem!

It seems like State gets up for the big games when they want to. But we also play down to the competition. I'm afraid we could come into this game thinking we already have it won, and forget to show up.

I think State should win, but I want to see us come out fired up even for a team everyone expects us to beat. We have too many upperclassmen to not play to our ability night in and night out.

Ah. TBK. I read one regarding your post on VT, and I passed it up. It wasn't worth my time. Yes. We are as bad on paper as we are in reality. I'll say that if VT can recruit like a weak Williams coach at UNC, and a strong coach at Duke, and a mediocre coach at State, we will rise up one day.

If we show some effort then I believe we can be anyone we want at home, much less VT. And if we really want to we could beat them in a landslide.

However, that depends on which team shows up. I still think we will win regardless of uninspired/sloppy play, but not like we should. If that happens I'll be disappointed even if we win.

But here's hoping the Pack will make a statement tomorrow. Go Pack!!

I honestly have not seen VT play this year even once. Going by their record, I feel like State should win this one going away.

Is VT as bad as they seem to be on paper?
