VT, do you recall any missed foul calls? I don't. When I watched the game on DVR, I was looking for (a) if the calls were valid, and (b) were any calls missed. I watched for both teams. I didn't really see many except a few very obvious bad calls.
Here's the way I see it. State pounded the ball inside on nearly every possession. VT fouled us a LOT in the act of shooting. So we shot a lot of free throws. VT took a lot of jump shots and 3-point attempts. They didn't pound it inside as much. So State didn't foul them as much. And a lot of those fouls that State DID commit were not in the act of shooting. So VT didn't shoot as many free throws.
Then there was the fouling at the end of regulation and at the end of OT because VT was behind.
And VT missed the front end of some 1-and-1's, which means they didn't get their second free throw attempt.
The FT disparity (alone) is not evidence of anything unfair. If anything, I actually thought State should have shot a few more. CJL got hammered on the arm, and the no-call led him to get a technical for letting the ref have an earful.
28 fouls called on VA Tech to 12 called on State. IMO, it makes sense because NC State is flat out the better team and when they are on offense, sometimes the only way to stop them is to foul them. VA Tech, on the other hand, 90% of their offense goes thru a perimeter player.
It's just an example of two teams that play completely different strategies and the one that's more interior-oriented is the one that forces the other team to foul more, simple as that.
Exactly, there were several factors as to why VT was fouling more:
1) State is the more talented team this year. VT had to foul at times.
2) We pounded the ball inside on just about every possession. VT shot jumpers and 3-pointers. So we had many more opportunities for fouls.
3) VT was in foul-mode at the end of regulation and at the end of OT because they were behind.
And yet State fans rejected this logic for years when Carolina led the league in free throws.
What's the word again? Ah, yes...hypocrites.
