    Interesting thread, Ken.

The media ranked both State and Carolina high in the preseason, something neither school lived up to.

On paper, State is the better team. Carolina improved a lot since their first meeting, but they are a younger team, and have more room to improve. I don't read too much into Carolina beating State, but the game did show Roy's coaching ability and the intensity and desire of the Carolina players.

Carolina is definitely trending upward, but they have a tough road ahead with their remaining games, while State has already played most of their difficult games.

I'll take Roy's coaching over Gott's, but I think the matchups in the ACCT as well as the NCAAT will have a lot to do with which team fares better.

To answer your question, State has older, more experienced players, but Carolina has the better coach. All factors considered, the teams are pretty even, but State may go further in the tourneys.

oooooooooo Seth Davis says that Kenpom might be one the sites members are free to look at ....

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/college-basketball/news/20130221/hoop-thoughts/

On the NCAA's own internal website, there is a link that reads "Links to Other Sites." Those sites are: NCAA RPI, Polls, Sagarin Ratings, CollegeRPI.com, RPI Ratings, LRMC Rankings, Pomeroy Rankings, Composite Ranking, Conference Monitoring, ESPN BPI. Jeanie Boyd, a veteran NCAA staffer who works closely with the committee from inside the room, told us that she has seen members arrive at selection week with their own rankings that aren't among those listed. Those other metrics are definitely a part of the discussion. If there is a big discrepancy between the rankings, the committee will go into a discussion to probe further into the numbers.

I think we do that a lot here. That is, pick a time period that is the most flattering to our school, or most hurtful to our rival's school. Not just during a season, but going back into history.

Did those two teams play the same opponents, with the same players, on the same court during that time frame? I doubt it. And it really doesn't matter. Both teams won their head to head game on their home court, and by comparable margins. Local fans will split hairs about their differences, just because they want to stick up for their team (well, maybe not hans). But fans around the country will pay no attention to the hair splitting, and neither will pollsters, analysts and selection committees.

Right now, I think these two teams are on the same line when it comes to NCAAT seeding. They could still separate in the next three weeks, but I don't think they will separate by much.

After reading the post games comments its clear UNC wanted this game more. Mcdonald, and Bullock said they wanted to win bad!! I didnt see this in State. CJL look like his mind was a thousand miles away. Brown got outplayed by a FRESHMAN, AND YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO BE ONE OF THE BEST PG'S IN THE COUNTRY. Big Rich, Scott, and T J played well. Yes UNC is the better team right now. I predict CJL will have 27pts, 12 boards the next game. My question is, How do you not get up for UNC with a chance to sweep (CJL)?

  • chapelthrillv2 Feb 24, 2013

Of course anything can happen in the NCAAT, but I'd have to give the edge to UNC simply because of Roy...he has a tradition of getting it done in the NCAAT while Gott does not.

Great work Ken. To add one line...the team who is trending up vs. trending down. The Pack clearly has issues, while the Heels seem to be finding answers to their issues. It's not in the stats as much as MO-mentum, and who is healthy. Dexter is getting stronger every game while Lo is obviously affected by is ankle. Then our key guy who tended to disappear is starting to re-appear in other ways besides the scoreboard, that would be JMM, and the Packs guy who tends to disappear is still doing just that, Mr. Leslie. Howell is an anchor, and Wood gives you what he gives you. TJ and Purvis have shown flashes of brilliance however they are not as consistent as needed, but they give good effort. The Pack was already thin and with Leslie's head being an issue, and Lo's ankle holding him up, the Pack is probably playing about 1/2-3/4 of a player short right now.

I'd have to say MoDuke nailed it. The fact is the only way you can really distinguish between these two teams is if you have a vested interest in the answer. If you look at their resumes without knowing or caring whose names were on the jerseys you'd say they were pretty even.

And which team will go deeper into the NCAAT will depend less on which of them is "better" and more on how their strengths and weaknesses match up with those of the teams they face in the tourney through luck of the draw.

Somebody posted on another thread that the people who vote in the polls are pretty smart guys. I don't think so. They are no smarter than you or I. If they were, they would have realized a couple of months ago that neither program deserved their preseason ranking. They got those rankings because voters recognized the names of the returning players, and assumed that what happened at the end of last season was a predictor for this season.

This will be a wide open NCAAT. IMO, there are at least a dozen teams that could win it all, and twice that many with a realistic shot at the Final Four. Don't be surprised if any (or none) of the top four teams in the ACC is one of them.

There comes a point, TBK, when it's time to man up instead of your ifs, ands, buts, becauses, and whatever conspiracy theory you can dream up. Stop digging your hole deeper. There's a reason I don't talk trash when I have no ground to stand on. There's a reason I don't thump my chest about preseason championships.
