Maybe we could forgive the Head Coach for being a bonehead if this was his first or second time, but it's more than three times at least that his stupidity has cost us momentum in a game. Yes, as Steve Logan says coaches get fired over such things as fake punts when you have the lead in a game, especially when you lose to one of your rivals.

.... .... .... yes, he's the Pack's Torbush, but without a Bowl win, and he's well on his way to being the first STATE Head Coach let go after only one season (Coach Michaels voluntarily stepped down so Lou Holtz could take over).

Another stunning hire by Yow. Mark "Plan Z" Gottfried stinks, too. Then she goes and fires Harper, one of the few good things we had going for us!

Before long (end of 2014) seasons, Yow will have NC State in same economic "red ink" she left Maryland with. The only smart choice is to fire her ASAP along with her hires.

Reminded me of the Monte Kiffin "on side kick" years ago. Dumb play then, and still dumb move yesterday!! Same old NCSU....Ha Ha

And he says he is going to remember the UNC celebration on his field "for 364 days" until he plays us again. Perfect! Just the sort of mindset UNC fans like to have NCSU's coaches stuck in!

Dave Doeren has not shown the football savvy needed to guide this team properly, he has game time management issues, mistakes every single game, and now this desperate attempt to seize defeat from the jaws of victory. It's obvious that you never call a fake punt when you have the lead, and certainly never ever when the other team hasn't even gotten on the scoreboard yet, not to mention where on the field he decided to do this, utterly foolish.

I find it interesting that NIU is still a top 25 team. I guess it wasn't the coach . 4th and 12 fake punt. No one with that thought process should be coaching major college football let alone high school. just a stupid move. Can't imagine what he was thinking when he heard this play called....." hey yea i like it...let's give it a try"....just shameful.

... "thinking", no he wasn't thinking much at all, it was a total act of fool heartiness, and really not needed at all. Why give the opposition any idea that you don't believe in yourselves as a team, really now, it showed a hand of desperation when there was no reason to be desperate.

  • georgecostanza Nov 4, 2013

I just find it frightening that a coach would ever believe that was the right call. Wether they make the first down or not is irrelevant. that was the worst call and a coach with that mind set is scary. I'm all for giving the guy a chance to get his own players in the system but regardless who the players were that was a terrible call. How long will NC State stick with a guy who is that brain dead?

5 Long Years! Then Gottfired and Doorguy will leave. And state will continue the 50 year rebuilding cycle it has always been on.

How many coaches that have been hired by NCSU are struggling, most, Doeren, Gottfried, Findley. Yow is out of her element, she almost ruined Maryland and now just because of her last name she is at NCSU. ECU and pretty soon UNCC will be the best teams in OUR STATE

I would bet the ranch that if the play had worked all the people now criticizing Doeren would have praised him to the skies for his bold leadership. Even if State had ultimately lost the game, as they may well have.

As for Northern Illinois having a good year after Doeren left, I don't see how that's a sign he wasn't a good coach. Seems to me, it's the opposite. He left a solid foundation - something he didn't find when he arrived in Raleigh. Let's give the guy some time here folks.

I agree that he has been a major contributor to three losses. And it was not just one play in each of the games. That third and one foot call inside the 10 against UNC where Mitchell ran a QB delay sweep (or whatever it was) and got caught for a loss was really cray. Just sneak or handoff. I have yet to hear him (D) take any blame for the losses in the press conferences. Always points to the players. We have to give him some more time to grow into the job, but I hope someone is watching closly and keeping score. I suspect that may be happening.

Larry Fedora called a fake punt out of his own end zone while at Southern Mississippi. It got the first down. I guess you are a hero if it works and a bum if it doesn't.

I agree that we should be patient, but you have to question the decisions of going for it 4th and long inside your own 30, but not going for on 4th and short, twice, inside the unc 10 yd line....at 0-4, and playing a rival, you gotta try for td's when that close, IF you are going to gamble....that fake punt would have been ok, late in the game, if you were trailing , and even that's a little iffy

The rest of us who didn't give a flip were out taking care of business. I was just glad I didn't have to go anywhere near the west side of Raleigh on Saturday. I feel sorry for all those wolves fans who felt like they just got rear ended after having to suffer another loss to the blue sheep of chapel hill.

The successful years of both UNC and NC State in football can be attributed to having head coaches with good Southern recruiting bases, for example, Bill Dooley, Mack Brown, Butch Davis, Dick Sheridan, Lou Holtz, and Chuck Amato. All 6 of those mentioned had good solid recruiting bases in the Southeast, and therefore, brought success to both programs. It's when both schools had head coaches whom had roots in the Northeast or upper midwest (In this example, Dick Crum, and now Dave Doeren) whom have had the most difficulties. Tom O'Brien himself recruited north to get his players more regular than in state. Here it is so vital to employ head coaches whom can talk on the same level as the kids, locally and regionally, here in the Southeast. It's really too early to tell if Doeren can turn around NC State, but Larry Fedora so far I've seen at UNC, has got some good young talent, especially on offense, and some on defense.

It is important to hire a head coach whom has a good Southern recruiting base, because the successful years of both UNC and NC State were all due in part to coaches whom recruited the state well, and the region. Our failures in the past were from coaches, whom came from areas outside our region..

Thanks Ken...once again you are dead on.

As for NIU being in the Top 25, I think that shows that a solid system with good talent was left in place there for the new coach. Something Doeren will need more than one recruiting class to put in place here at State.

  • chevycolorado Nov 4, 2013

I agree with the concept that coaches need at least 3-4 years time to see the end results of team success.

Lighten up, Francis. Doeren ain't done by a dang site.

We're doing more "trickeration" than we've probably ever done, because we're masking our lack of talent and depth.

Here's the truth of it... TOB would be having a similar season if he was still here. The difference is that his 2014 incoming class would be ranked around 75th in the nation. Doeren's is around 25th.

We have no talent, no depth, and we also have a first year coach that is having to fit square pegs in round holes this season. Just write it off for what it is. A transition year. We're rebuilding. Accept it.

I'm not excusing that fake punt decision. That was stupid stupid stupid.

What bugged me the most was the ball carrier ran right into the mass of humanity there at the line of scrimmage. We needed eight yards. Why wouldn't he run away from that mass of humanity?!??

But yes, the play call was stupid, and the execution of it was horrendous.

I was waiting for the "if it worked you would all be saying how good it was" line. WRONG. It was a horrible call. Horrible, the guy doesn't make smart decisions. The team makes silly penalties, is undisciplined and now I know where they get it from....the coach. Undisciplined stupid play. Doeren has sealed his fate. Gone in 2 years max.
