NC State's baseball program received huge news Monday when signees Brett Austin and Carlos Rodon chose to not sign pro contracts with the Padres and Brewers respectively.

Both players had been in Raleigh attending summer classes. The deadline for drafted players to sign with major league teams was midnight on Aug. 15, and it went down to the wire for both players.

Austin, a switch-hitting catcher out of Charlotte Providence High School, was picked No. 54 overall by the San Diego Padres. He hit .537 this past season with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs. Austin reportedly turned down a seven-figure signing bonus from the Padres to attend NC State.

Rodon, a left-handed pitcher out of Holly Springs High School, was a 16th round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers. He finished the year with an 11-0 record and a 1.40 ERA with 135 strikeouts. In the state finals he pitched a complete game two-hitter in one game and batted .500 for the series, taking home MVP honors.

Both players are expected to contribute right away at NC State.

RE: Two Pack players choose college over MLB

Regarding my earlier 'NCSU season ticket' post yesterday - got a call today, NCSU isn't taking baseball season ticket applications at this time...those interested should apply in December.....and the reason I was given is the '2012 season ticket prices' have not yet been determined - i.e., EXPECT AN INCREASE!

RE: Two Pack players choose college over MLB

Both should have the chance to start right away. Catcher should be one our weakest positions next year as we lost Pratt Maynard and Chris Schaefer so Austin should have no problem winning that job. Also we lost Cory Mazzoni leaving a spot open in the weekend rotation. If Rodon is as good as advertised he should be able to join the rotation from day one.

we lost Maynard and Mazzoni??..they went pro??i know they were only juniors...bummer!

Great news for Wolfpack Baseball! Hopefully these guys can help get us over the hump and into a CWS. I'd still like to see an upgrade to our baseball stadium, but in college baseball that usually comes with winning on a large stage - kind of a Catch 22.

the stadium was just upgraded 3-4 yrs ago....State hosted their first ever ncaa regional in the new environs in '08...and won it over sc and Ray Tanner, the current b-t-b national champions.....go check it out, its good enough to host a regional as it is....some ncaa schools that make the ncaa tourney cannot host b/c they dont have facilities that meet the specs...they have to "host" at another schools place...happened this past tourney out west...great news for the Pack...they should be a powerful team next yr if they dont have underclassmen go pro....need Mazzoni to come back to pair w/ Rodon...they only had 5 seniors last yr, and only one was a starter(pitcher Chamra).....they should be primed for a great run next yr...Go Pack!!

Count me in the group that thinks they should have taken the money and run.

Not only is there the chance for an injury to happen (even if they're covered by the insurance policy), but people only have so many years they can play sports. These kids are shortening their pro careers by three years, all things being equal. That's three fewer years of getting PAID.

And Hans, don't think we missed your snide remark. It's hard to believe you, of all people, would make a snide remark against someone associated with NC State. That's so unlike you.

I agree, sometimes it takes a lot of at bats to make it in the major leagues. Baseball is different than football and basketball. They should have taken advantage of the offer.

Well since the media coverage has had a biased slant towards NCSU lately, I will try to balance some of the news here:

With Cody Stubbs (Washington Nationals, 14th round), Josh Ake (New York Mets, 29th round), Chris McCue (New York Yankees, 35th round), Adam Griffin (Cleveland Indians, 44th round) and Zac LaNeve (Florida Marlins, 44th round) not signing Carolina will welcome in 17 newcomers this fall.

Signees Bryan Brickhouse (Kansas City Royals, third round) and Dillon Maples (Chicago Cubs, 14th round) signed professional
