NC State

CJ Leslie to sit out 3 games for NCAA violation

Posted November 11, 2011

Forward CJ Leslie will sit out the next three games after it was determined that he and a relative had received impermissible benefits totaling $410.

NC State reported violations to the NCAA. The university and the NCAA conducted a joint inquiry to determine the facts.

Following an auto accident in May 2011, Leslie borrowed a car from a friend and former NC State student. He used the car for about a week. In addition, the facts indicate that the same former student paid apartment application fees for Leslie's half-brother.

Leslie also will make charitable contributions of $410. The contributions represent the value of the car had it been rented ($150) and the application fees ($260).

Leslie was declared ineligible by the university and a reinstatement was requested through the NCAA, which granted the request on Tuesday provided Leslie sits out three games and makes the foregoing charitable contributions. He will return to competition on Nov. 19th for the game against Vanderbilt.

"I understand the issue and regret was has occurred," Leslie said. "I will support my teammates in every way possible and look forward to getting back to the court."

The former student also admitted providing $1,349 in impermissible benefits to a former student athlete, which remains the subject of further review and handling through standard NCAA processes. Consequently, NC State will not comment further until the review is completed to the satisfaction of the university and the NCAA.

It's not Russell. If it were Russell, he would not be playing at Wisconsin right now. Use your noggin.

I'm disappointed in this, but this is just not that bigga deal. It's already resolved with the NCAA and Calvin has to sit out one more game and it's over. There's another mini-scandal being investigated that may carry more weight, and it's still being investigated. Some ex-player gave another ex-player $1300 in impermissible benefits. And I think the ex-player involved is the one talking. I can only imagine if ANYONE at Carolina would talk how bad their scandal would be. Instead, they all lawyer-up and clam up.

That's ok, whatever comes of this won't be bad and we'll all just move on from it. Carolina on the other hand....... won't be just moving on from their scandal. Still waiting for the sanctions. Then we'll have some real fun with it.

I don't believe Russell would have taken money. Also, if that was the case, and we knew the NCAA was investigating (it's been under investigation for a while now I think), I don't think Russell would have been accepted at Wisconsin. And I don't think we'd have let them take him without letting them know under the table.

It's silly to me...no sense at all.

If true, we need to investigate whether Coach forced RW out because of it. If Coach's knowledge can be proved or inferred, isn't it a serious violation for hiding information?

"The former student also admitted providing $1,349 in impermissible benefits to a former student athlete," I've said it all along. RW, that's why he left.

lsmithiii is correct. It's not about what NCSU has reported. It's about what NCSU has not reported. More importantly, what's yet to come. As fabulous a player as Rodney, there were reasons why Duke and UNC stayed away.

However, I do think NCSU will get an easier pass from the media simply because no many people care about this school (i.e.: not news worthy). Duke fans couldn't care less. UNC fans would have probably had a quick laugh then move on if not for the revenge factor.
