Raleigh, N.C. — North Carolina State cornerback David Amerson has been named the recipient of the 2011 Jack Tatum Award, which is given annually to the top defensive back in college football by The Touchdown Club of Columbus.
Amerson was named to the All-ACC first-team after leading the nation and tying a conference record with 11 interceptions. The 11interceptions set a school record surpassing Art Rooney who picked off eight passes twice in 1937-38.
Amerson has picked off two passes three different times this season and has returned one for a touchdown.
The sophomore is a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award which also honors the best defensive back in the country along with LSU's Morris Claiborne and Alabama's Mark Barron.
Past winners of the Tatum Award include Charles Woodson (Michigan), the late Sean Taylor (Miami), and last year's winner Patrick Peterson (LSU).
Amerson and the Wolfpack will play in the Belk Bowl against Louisville on Dec. 27.
The Jack Tatum Award will be presented during the 57th Touchdown Club of Columbus Awards Banquet on Feb. 11, 2012.
