NC State All-American shortstop Chris Diaz issued an apology Monday for his actions at the conclusion of the Wolfpack’s 9-8 loss to Florida in extra innings.

“I regret my actions from the end of Sunday’s game,” said Diaz. “The emotions of the moment overwhelmed me, and unfortunately I acted in a way that was unsportsmanlike. I have tried throughout my career to be a leader for this team and university, and don’t want these actions to reflect poorly on NC State. I understand that the umpires and the NCAA officials have a difficult job to do, and I would like to apologize for the way I reacted in an emotional situation.”

Diaz argued a called strike three that signaled the final out of Sunday’s game, ending the Pack’s season in the Gainesville Super Regional.

“[Chris] has exhibited outstanding character both on and off the field during his career at NC State, and it’s unfortunate that his outburst on Sunday has left a negative impression,” said NC State head coach Elliott Avent. “He understands that the way he acted is not tolerated by our coaching staff or the administration of our university, and he’s sincerely apologized to me and our administrator since the incident. I have spoken with the umpires, they understand the situation and accepted his apology.

Emotions have the ability to cloud the judgement of anyone, especially true competitors like Chris. My only hope is that our fans, our university, and the NCAA will accept his heartfelt apology.”

I agree with the general thought that none of us can really blame him for letting his emotions get the best of him. He has so much passion for the game, and for his team to continue playing...to have it all come crashing down in that instant must be very difficult to handle.

I also want to thank the UNC fans that are also respectful of that viewpoint and supportive of Diaz's apology. Thanks for showing class!!! I am one of those that honestly believes the majority of UNC fans are actually quite civil, respectful, and reasonable in real life.

Probably 99% of us when sober are very cordial to each other in person regardless of sports affiliations. Its sitting anonymously at a computer that makes some become horses' behinds.

exactly, and quite fun too. Meet me in person and you would never be able to tell that I am Ligg, the Beast on the Hill!

The call was questionable but the pitch was close, no where near a foot outside. In extra innings, you just cannot watch that ball go by. it was a very good pitch from the UF pitcher and exactly where he should have been pitching it. I give NCSU baseball much credit for hanging in there with the Gators as well as they did.

Former player for the Pack here. Great regional games. U of F should be glad it rained on Sunday. Because if it didn't this team would be in Omaha right now. Mother nature does it again!

An for the record that was a bad call! An what makes matters worse for me you don't make that call to finish a game that way. Border line strikes in a final game like this..!!!!!! Come on!!!!!!

So, you know for sure that if it hadn't rained on Sunday...NC State would've taken the last 2 games? And what about the terrible call at home where Canela didn't tag Turgeon, but the ump called him out? That was a run. Bad calls at the plate in a final game like this!!! Come on!!!

The last pitch was way off the plate. Diaz was right to be upset but needs to control his temper. When you work as hard as these kids do and for as long as they do it is understandable. Florida needs to be banned as a site due to the weather there unless they move their games early or late in the day. FL really did not have that good of a pitching staff, but pretty good hitters. SC will take them this time around, if not FSU for sure!

This entire post makes no sense. Banned as a site? Doesn't work like that. The #1 seed is going to host. That's how it works. And Florida doesn't have a good pitching staff? They have the #1 WHIP, #2 in walks allowed, #1 in K's to walks ratio and #8 ERA...nationally. And that was against the #2 ranked strength of schedule. So, I think the numbers bear out that Florida was a pretty good pitching team. The guy who was facing Rodon...Jonathan Crawford. He threw a no-hitter the week before. There are other great pitchers in the country.

true story...However, these games should've been scheduled as prime-time. A. No. 1 Florida should get priority viewership, B. It rains in Florida nearly EVERYDAY around 3-5, C. it's BALL hot and humid during that time!

I would have had no problem if it'd been scheduled then.
