NC State's Rodon named NCBWA Freshman Pitcher of the Year

Lynchburg, Va. — NC State's Carlos Rodon has been named the 2012 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman Pitcher of the Year, announced by the organization Tuesday.

Rodon, a semifinalist of the Dick Howser trophy, became the first freshman in ACC history to be named either the conference’s Pitcher or Player of the Year. The left-hander was also selected the ACC Freshman of the Year. Rodon leads the ACC with a 1.57 ERA, 114 2/3 innings pitched, and a .176 opponent batting average. He finished second in the conference with a 9-0 record and 135 strikeouts.

The Holly Springs, N.C. product was an All-ACC First Team selection, received Louisville Slugger All-America first team honors, and was named Freshman Pitcher of the Year from Collegiate Baseball News. He has also been selected as one of five semifinalists for the College Baseball Foundation’s National Pitcher of the Year Award, and one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award.

Rodon helped NC State post a 43-20 record and claim the NCAA Raleigh Regional Championship. The Wolfpack is currently ranked No. 11 in the NCBWA Weekly Poll, and No. 12 in the Collegiate Baseball News Poll.

Congratulations Rodon. What a fantastic year for the young man. BTW, Rodon did not start in the first Florida game because he is number two in the rotation. Aventt explained that in the post game conference. That rotation had obviously worked fairly well for the Pack all year, seeing as they were in the super regional, so he did not want to disrupt that. Now, would I have liked to have seen Rodon pitch first to have a better chance to take an early series lead, yes. What's done is done and how about we just celebrate an outstanding year and give the praise these young men deserve. Florida was not the #1 overall seed for no reason.

Great honor and well-deserved. Congrats to Rodon. Looking forward to 2 more years with him at State.

Agreed, but as a Heels fan, I'm NOT looking forward to seeing Rodon for two more years:) Joking aside, he seems like a great guy with tremendous talent and a bright future ahead. Hope he gets the "Golden Cleats" award as well.
