A five-year strategic plan to advance athletics was released by NC State Monday with goal No. 1 of achieving national recognition.

Seven specific goals are outlined in the 29-page plan with emphasis on graduation, funding and branding. More Info     N.C. State Logo More NCSU Stories

"It is important that we set measurable goals and establish accountability for their achievement," said Director of Athletics Debbie Yow. "This strategic plan does that comprehensively and specifically. It is an important part of the Wolfpack's forward momentum. Over 60 faculty, staff, students and boosters contributed to the development of this plan last year and I am grateful for their efforts to help us chart our course for the next 5 years."

The strategic goals, in addition to achieving national recognition, are: graduate student athletes, cultivate an environment, allocate financial resources, recruit and retain, generate the funds required and create innovative branding.

The measurable for the national recognition will be finish in the ACC as well as the Director’s Cup standings. NC State made a historic 52-spot jump in the Director’s Cup standings from 2010 to 2012. The defined goal is to be in the top 25 by 2017.

As part of the financial plans, the football program is aiming to sell out all mini plans in 2015 and only offer full-season ticket packages in 2017 for 35,500 seats. The basketball program is aiming to sell more upper-level seats and have the lower and club levels sold out in 2016-17. Ticket sales goals are also in place for women’s basketball and baseball

The construction of the plan called Wolfpack Unlimited: A Strategic Plan for Advancing NC State's Department of Athletics: 2012-2017 began in 2010 with an objective of setting measurables for intercollegiate athletics. Student-athletes, coaches, administrators, donors, members of the University Athletics Council, university students, faculty, staff, and alumni all had voices in creating the plan.

LOL @ the sportznut....

it went from saying NCSU wasn't "nationally relevant" to saying "they're a flash in the pan".

Fred Astaire would be blushing, watching these dance moves.

Sustained relevance, by definition of the word sustained, CANNOT happen in one or two years. It has started. State has achieved relevance. Give it time and it will become SUSTAINED relevance.

Thanks for clearing that up for everyone.

you are mistaking a two year flash in the pan with relevance

No, you are mistaking a two year ONGOING success for a flash in the pan.

Only when the success has ended can it then be judged a flash in the pan. We are about to begin year three. The proof will be in the pudding.

It is you that is assuming it is over now, and that's a really bad assumption to make given the state of our basketball, football and baseball programs (meaning personnel, coaching, facilities, etc.) There's no reason to expect it to end ANY. TIME. SOON.

But you keep on believing what you have to believe to make it through the day. That's understandable given the expected drop off in Carolina basketball this year. And we already know the sad state of Carolina football that is now rebuilding. Not sure about baseball, since I'm not a big enough fan to follow it on that level.

And only when it is sustained can it be deemed relevance.....NC State has no relevance at this point..that is why they made a 5 year plan to try and achieve it

Only in your mind. State was relevant this year in the big three sports, and has been relevant for a couple of years in football. And the relevance is CURRENT. It has not ended. When State becomes irrelevant again, then and only then can it be determined if it was a flash in the pan or not.

That you cannot admit relevance is your problem, not ours. State is favored by some (outside the fan base) to win the ACC in basketball. We're expected to compete for the ACC championship (and beyond) in football. We're expected to make a CWS appearance in baseball.

That's relevance, BUD!

Stop the sour grapes and just admit it. The dark days of NC State irrelevance are OVER. I know it's more fun for you to call State irrelevant. But when you cling to that when it is over just makes you look like the hot blonde that still thinks she's hot well into her 60's. It's over. State is back to relevance. Le it go, and enjoy the ride!

you know how many schools can claim two bowl wins and a sweet 16 appearance in a two year period?

State has already achieved relevance. Sweet 16 in basketball and ranked in the final poll. 17 wins in two years in football, including two bowl wins. Reached Super Regional in baseball. State is one of (I believe) three programs to achieve all that.

If you can't admit that is relevant, it's evidence of your blue-bellied bias.

State has been trying unsuccessfully to be relevant in sports for the last 20 years. Good luck to themn.
