Gottfried eager for Purvis' return to classroom, court

While the NCAA continues to gather information on Upper Room Christian Academy, North Carolina State basketball commit Rodney Purvis continues to sit at home. Wolfpack head coach Mark Gottfried hopes that changes soon for academic purposes over basketball.

“The tough thing for Rodney is that school has started and he needs to get into school really quick and get going academically. That’s the most important thing is to put him in a position where he has a chance to have success academically,” Gottfried said Monday while joining Adam and Joe on 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio.

Gottfried said that he is hoping for an NCAA ruling within the week, but said that as of now, he has no official update on the status of the inquiry into the high school’s core classes. He added that the more school Purvis misses, the harder it will be on him as a student.

“He will have to buckle-down and catch up, and do all the things that anybody would have to do if you miss the first couple days, but he’s certainly capable,” Gottfried said. “He did a great job in summer school, did a terrific job academically, and we’re just hoping it gets resolved really quick.”

On the court, Purvis was forced to stay back as the team went to Spain on a preseason trip. The improving health of guard Lorenzo Brown was a positive for NC State while on the trip, but Purvis is considered a player that can step in as a freshman and get considerable, and much needed, playing time. Gottfried said that the toughest part of the NCAA clearance review on Purvis was missing the trip.

“He was down like we all would be if it was one of us,” Gottfried said. “It was hard while we were gone. I think since our players have been back, it’s been better but he’s on pins and needles, waiting on a decision.”

Gottfried said the trip was a combination of improving the team early on and team building. He noted it’s tough to fully bond as a team when the team is not all together. NC State went 4-0 in Spain getting double-digit scoring from all five starters in their final game.

“Rodney Purvis did everything that was asked of him to do,” Gottfried said. “He’s not one of these kids that bounced around to a hundred different schools. He’s done everything that has been asked of him by the adults. There’s some apprehension, but at the same time, optimism that it will get all worked out. He’s handled everything very well and with a lot of class.”

Funny post at PackPride:

Rodney [Purvis] went to his first classes today.

Meanwhile, we're still waiting for some of UNC's graduates to go to theirs.

If all y'all have to do at pack pride is to hate on UNC then I pity you. With that attitude, you will continue to be the other triangle university.

Lighten up, goat. It was a funny post. You have to have a sense of humor about these things. Not only was it funny, it was nominated by a few people for post of the day, deservedly so!

And the comment before that was a little outdated. The NCAA did the right thing in letting Purvis go to class while they sort this stuff out.

Sad

It's a shame these kids cannot at least attend class pending the ruling. If the ruling is adverse to a student, the NCAA should clear them to proceed to Junior College or other alternatives as if they had never enrolled. At least this way the student would not get behind in their studies. Someone has not thought this process through at the NCAA.

Think things through? The NCAA? You must have them confused with somebody else. These are the same people who brought the hammer down on Cal Tech (D-III, no scholarships) because a basketball player, following the long-standing school policy applicable to every student, audited a class before formally enrolling in it. Because they are on a quarter system, this occurred during the season. So when he played in a game, the NCAA ruled Cal Tech had used an ineligible player (that is, one who was not enrolled) and put them on three years probation and banned them from postseason play.

The penalty, of course, was harsher than it might have been because Cal Tech was deemed to have failed to exercise institutional control. That was true. Cal Tech pays almost no attention to athletics. They worry more about things like electrical engineering and nuclear physics, the subjects their athletes study, than athletics itself. This is evidenced by the fact that the NCAA couldn't vacate any wins for the team, because they hadn't won a conference game in 26 years. That's not 26 games - it's 26 years!

Way to protect the integrity of intercollegiate athletics, NCAA. Sheldon Leonard would be proud of you.

Well said. The NCAA is also the organization that apparently cares nothing about the massive academic fraud at U*NC, but for some reason suddenly cares greatly about the academics at an otherwise STATE ACCREDITED high school.

Please remove the rosy red sunglasses Chuck Amato left you and stop whining about UNC (again). This investigation that he is going through is normal.Could or should it have been started earlier?Sure, but unfortunately it wasn't.Rodney seems to be a good kid and I hope everything works out for him.

Thing is, they can't keep him out of the classroom. If he really wanted to attend class, he could (free country and all). But they do control if he can play D-1 sports or not. If he were to go to school, his eligibility could be in jeopardy, depending on the outcome. If he wants to play basketball at State, he pretty much HAS to wait for their decision.

If he's not eligible for D1 at State he wouldn't be anywhere else so why does it matter if he starts school now or not? Maybe I'm not understanding this...

If he's not eligible right now, he could enroll at Hargrave or somewhere and finish up and be eligible next year. But if he enrolls at State NOW, I think that changes things somewhat. Seems like I saw where he would either lose his eligibility, or would lose it for two years or something like that. And if Purvis loses D-1 eligibility for two years, there's a good chance he doesn't play college ball at all.

Thanks.

Saw this, too:

"If Purvis had attended classes, prior to being cleared by the NCAA, he would have been considered a "nonqualifier" in NCAA vernacular."

"Purvis will be on scholarship this academic year, according to the source, but he has not been cleared for the 2012-13 season by the NCAA. It's possible Purvis will still have to sit out the season, but N.C. State is in the process of working on getting him cleared before the start of the season in November."
