North Carolina State freshman guard Rodney Purvis has been cleared to attend class but is still awaiting a decision by the NCAA on his playing status, the school confirmed Tuesday morning.
“Starting classes today is most important to me. The basketball will work itself out. I appreciate everyones prayers,” Purvis said on his twitter account Tuesday morning.

Purvis, part of the first graduating class at Upper Room Christian Academy in Raleigh, will have his scholarship honored at NC State as he attends class, but his playing eligibility for the 2012-13 season remains in question. The NCAA is conducting a review of Upper Room to verify the core credits meet the standards of the NCAA Eligibility Center.
The NCAA Eligibility Center High School Review states, “The initial-eligibility certification of a prospective student-athlete cannot be finalized without complete information from all high schools/programs the prospective student-athlete attended.”
According to the NCAA, during an “extended evaluation,” high schools need to inform the eligibility center of courses, grading scales and other related information relating to core classes in order to be approved.
Purvis, who took and passed summer classes at NC State, has missed almost a week of class to start the fall semester and was also prevented from joining the basketball team on a preseason exhibition tour in Spain. Head coach Mark Gottfried said Monday that not being able to attend the trip was difficult on the freshman, but the academics are the most important thing and he is confident in the NCAA process.
“The most important thing is to put him in a position where he has a chance to have success academically,” Gottfried said Monday while joining Adam and Joe on 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio. “He did a great job in summer school, did a terrific job academically, and we’re just hoping it gets resolved really quick.”
The 6-foot-2 Purvis is one of three highly-touted freshman recruited to the Wolfpack this season along with forward T.J. Warren and guard Tyler Lewis.

RE: Purvis cleared for class, waiting on playing status
Purvis is just the tip of a very large iceberg. It's been long overdue that the NCAA needs to crack down on sports training academies masquerading as high schools. That problems were anticipated with Purvis' eligibility well over a year ago by other NCAA BB coaches makes it just a bit hypocritical that the NCSU's coaching staff now blames the NCAA for foot dragging.
Even SI has picked up on this disturbing growing trend: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/magazine/08/22/high-school-football-virtual-powerhouse/index.html?xid=cnnbin
Relying on the cloak of religious education, many of these schools are nothing but sports camps with no formal HS instruction, just a series of counselors who guide the students through a program of simple online HS classes with less than vigorous instruction. These schools are setup by savvy investors who realize that investing 50-60K at the untraceable HS level can easily lead to the production of a top NCAA athlete, with the implication that will also translate to a top Pro draft pick and potentially millions in return.
Imagine the outrage if a series of NCAA universities suddenly appeared with the majority of their students are nothing but athletes taking online classes. It already appears to be the case. The subculture of college athletes at major programs already take far less demanding classes than the rest of the student body.
If you are going to root out this sport cancer attacking and making a joke of the academic institutions they claim to represent on the field - why not start at the origin? The false private high schools - which are nothing but farm camps, enabling the academically weak but athletically gifted - to not only gain entry to college, but to get top shelf athletic training prior to entry.

Is Coger transferring from Upper Room because he's concerned about problems that Purvis has had having come from Upper Room to NC State? I'm wondering if there is a problem with this Upper Room.

Funny how when the football mess broke out at UNC, a bunch of you were pounding your chest about how "rules are rules" and that the NCAA was doing just an outstanding job in protecting student athletes. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, the NCAA is now a joke?
Which is it?
That being said, this whole situation is a complete mess, and I hate it for Rodney that the slow wheels of the NCAA are keeping him out of the classroom (previously) and off the court. There seems to be a complete lack of common sense in the offices of the NCAA.

I don't think anyone EVER said the NCAA wasn't a joke.
They were a joke the way they handled Carolina, and they're a joke for the way they're handling this. And they are using an electron microscope to check Purvis' eligibility as if they care about academics, but have not said a word about the academic fraud we're learning was so rampant for so long at Carolina.
So not only is the NCAA a joke in both instances, they are actually an INCONSISTENT joke in these two instances. But a joke, nonetheless.

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly that the NCAA is a joke, and isn't the least bit concerned about the welfare of the students / student-athletes. I was just referring to the stark differences in the tone of the comments about the NCAA when it came to UNC vs this case with Purvis (not necessarily you mind you).
And as far as the NCAA not saying much about the academic mess happening now, don't worry, they will. And mark my words.....it will involve the basketball program to a degree also. So get your popcorn ready, and grab a comfy seat. All the ABC'ers will have at least another 12 months to party!!!

There SHOULD be a different tone when it comes to UNC's scandal (rampant, cheating, cover-ups, slow to investigate, etc...) and this case of an "A" student who did everything asked of him, and cannot get a "review" completed in a timely fashion.
I'm not worried about the NCAA not coming back. I believe they will, and are just waiting for the current investigations to reveal as much as possible before they come rolling back into town.
But this Purvis stuff is just frustrating. The kid WANTED to go to class (glad they finally let him, so that's a point in the NCAA's favor). He just wants to compete, and thanks to a bureaucratic organization's foot-dragging, he does not know what will happen.
I read that 50 schools are in the same boat (extended NCAA review). So it is not unheard of. Just a little rare.
But to say we shouldn't approach the UNC situation with a different tone than the Purvis situation is ludicrous. Of course we should. He's TRYING to do everything right and can't get a fair shake. UNC has been TRYING to do everything to cover up and avoid punishment, and the NCAA isn't going after them enough for it.

I think they are investigating the private school, are they not? To compare with UNC, I believe there were innocent football players who were held out of games and eventually cleared by the NCAA. Those players lost game time and did nothing wrong except being associated with an organization that had problems (UNC). Maybe, Purvis is in same boat being associated with another organization that may have problems (the private school).

Point taken!
And, for the record,I'm a die-hard UNC fan to the core, but I'm tired of all this nonsense that's happening. I'll still be a die-hard fan when it's all said and done, but I will NOT be one of those fans defending them when the hammer comes down. Some say "every program does it", which is probably true to a certain extent, but UNC should be above that, and set an example of how to be successful "the right way". Sorry, I'm just frustrated with the whole debacle!!!

So if Purvis completes his freshman year on an athletic scholarship without being cleared by the NCAA to play basketball can he then declare for the NBA?
