Charleston, S.C. — The competition was stronger, but the outcome was the same for NC State's volleyball team on Saturday morning as the Wolfpack swept Sacramento State 3-0 at the Comfort Inn & Suites West Ashley Invitational.
Sophomore outside hitters Dariyan Hopper and Nikki Glass had big numbers for the Wolfpack (2-0), but 12 of the 18 players on the active roster saw action in the first ever meeting between the two teams.
"This team was way better than the team we played on Friday, so it was a good test for us," said third-year head coach Bryan Bunn, whose team opened the season on Friday with a 3-0 win over Jacksonville. "I thought we passed the ball really well. Our two outside hitters hit the ball very well."
Hopper had 15 kills, four digs and three blocks for her 16.5 points, while Glass had 13 kills, a team-high 16 digs and a service ace en route to her 16.5 points.
Freshman Morgan Cormier came off the bench to contribute eight kills and three blocks for her 10 points. Sophomore Alesha Wilson also had a good performance from the bench, with six kills, a .364 hitting average and three blocks.
"We know we are deep, so we will get a lot of people into the match," Bunn said. "They have to play well once they get there," Bunn said. "Mo came in on the right side and did a nice job and Alesha came in and played well in the middle."
Senior libero Alexa Micek had 13 digs and senior setter Megan Cyr had 48 assists.
As a team, the Pack posted a .232 hitting average, with five service aces and 14 blocks.
In the opening set, sophomore outside hitter Dariyan Hopper had five kills and sophomore Nikki Glass had seven digs to lead State to a comfortable 25-15 win to take a 1-0 lead.
The Wolfpack fell behind 20-18 in the second set, but after Bunn called timeout, Hopper led her team on a 7-1 run to win the game 25-21 and grab a 2-0 lead in the match. Hopper scored three of the points, while Cyr finished off the game with a service ace.
In the final set, the Wolfpack broke free in a close set to win 25-21 to complete its second consecutive 3-0 sweep to start the season.
Bunn's team faces host College of Charleston Saturday at 7 p.m., looking to go 3-0 to open the season for the first time since 1995 when the Wolfpack won its first seven contests. The game can be viewed live here Live stream for $1.99. Live stats are available here Gametracker.
"So far, it has been about what we expected," Bunn said. "College of Charleston is usually at the top of its conference and we are playing in their gym, so this will be a good test for us."
The Wolfpack opens its home season on Friday when it hosts the NC State Midtown Courtyard Invitational at Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack will play on Friday against South Florida at 7 p.m. and against Kent State on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m.
