Raleigh, N.C. — Miami scored twice in the final 10:25 of the match for a 2-0 win over the NC State women’s soccer team Thursday night from Dail Soccer Field.
Ashley Finn and Jasime Paterson each scored their second goal of the season to give Miami (6-4-1, 1-2 ACC) its first ACC victory of the season.
NC State (5-7, 0-3 ACC) received a great effort from goal keeper Victoria Hopkins to stay in the game until the final minutes. She made 11 saves on the evening, before the Wolfpack made a concerted effort to push forward on offense. That allowed the ‘Canes some more breathing room to find the back of the net.
Finn broke through the State defense and slipped a shot into the lower-left corner at 79:35.
A few minutes later Miami keeper Emily Lillard played a deep ball that Paterson ran down and she went 1-v-1 with Hopkins and her side-step move left her a wide open goal mouth at 87:32.
NC State only had four shots on goal, but it was certainly a case of quality over quantity. Freshman Caroline Gentry had a fine look at goal in the first half from about 12 yards, but Lillard pushed the blast aside for one of her four saves on the night.
After the second goal, NC State responded with two great looks in the final minutes. Sophomore Cheyenne Spade lofted a shot into the upper-right corner that forced Lillard to push the ball over the cross bar.
The ensuing corner kick from Meghan Proper found the foot of freshman Shannon Colligan on a one-touch and again Lillard was up to the task with a difficult save to keep her clean sheet intact.
NC State hosts No. 1 Florida State on Sunday at 1 p.m., on ESPN3.
