State earns first ACC win with 76-71 victory over Georgia Tech
By Ryan Craig Jan 17, 2009
It took overtime, but State finally got its first conference win of the season, a 76-71 victory over Georgia Tech.
After Trevor Ferguson hit a free throw to make the score 73-71, Dennis Horner forced a turnover on the Yellow Jackets' next possession. The 6-foot-9 junior then calmly knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Wolfpack a two possession lead with under nine seconds to play.
Brandon Costner led the Pack with 22 points and seven rebounds before fouling out of the game.
Ben McCauley had a fantastic game in the post, tallying 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists on the afternoon.

I didn't mean to totally dismiss this game. But it's just that Tech is arguably the worst team in the league. It was great to hold serve at home and get this win, especially when we got so far behind late in the game.
I said it didn't mean Carolina was great just because they beat Virginia. This is kinda the same thing. But if it builds confidence for the Pack, then it's a great win!

I'm as big a State fan as the next guy, but YOU have to be realistic. If our guard play improves throughout the course of the season and Costner and McCauley continue to play well, then HOPEFULLY we'll get an invite to the big dance.
I'm a state fan as well, but you have to be realistic. There is no chance in hell this team makes the NCAA tourney. NO CHANCE IN HELL. We barely beat the worst team in the ACC on our home court in overtime.
Good win though, I think Lowe actually outcoached somebody, but outcoaching Paul Hewitt isn't really anything special, that is for sure.

I thought this was a well coached game. Good presses at good times, well placed timeouts, solid defense for offense subs, and waiting to give that last foul at 3 or 4 seconds is what put us into OT. I am not usually a Degand fan but his drives set us up to win at the end (he needs to work on turnovers and assists though) Brandon played well and Ben was good on the boards. Dennis Horner provided some of the best bench play of the season, and a few clutch 3s by Shaggy. Plus GT scored more than double what they usually do on 3s and almost doubled their FT. Good win Sid.
When Degand or Mays has one of their good possessions you can see a good point guard would make this team so much better.
I usually don't disagree with TBK but I think this does mean something. We can come from behind and pull out a clutch win (I agree it shouldn't have been that hard but still)

The Pack has started the march to the final four. Mark this date down as the day the PACK started down the road to the final four.
This is a quality win that will turn the season around for the PACK. Bring on the Tarheels, Dec's, and Blue Devils.

Oh jeez. I'm as big a State fan as the next guy, but you have to be realistic. If our guard play improves throughout the course of the season and Costner and McCauley continue to play well, then HOPEFULLY we'll get an invite to the big dance. And hey, if that doesn't happen, then so what, I'll still root for 'em every game. I'm just glad that we got that first ACC win under our belts.

This win proves nothing, but at least it got the ACC monkey off our backs. And at least for now, we're not at the bottom of the standings.
It was just nice to see them not roll over and play dead like they did against the Criminoles.
