N.C. State receivers undergo surgery
By Tim Hall Feb 6, 2009
N.C. State took a hit to the wider receiver unit this week. Juniors Donald Bowens and Darrell Davis will both miss the entire 2009 spring practice session as they recover from surgery.
Bowens unfortunately missed the entire 2008 season with a back injury, and now other injuries are plaguing the wide-out. On Wednesday he underwent reconstructive surgery on his knee.
In 2007, Bowens emerged as a top receiving threat for the Wolfpack. He recorded an 11 catch, 200 yard performance against Virginia. He had nearly 600 yards and four touchdowns on the season.
On Tuesday Davis had his posterior labral repaired. Davis was part of a young receiving corps that saw significant playing time in 2008 as a result of injuries. He caught six balls and scored a touchdown, while appearing in every game.

I don't know if Bowen's will be completely ready by next fall or not. From what I heard it was the "terrible triangle"...anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate, and medial collateral. If that's true, there's usually cartilage damage, too. Just basically a very nasty knee injury. If it wasn't that severe, he should be o.k. physically. Speaking from experience as someone who had a reconstruction and as a former athletic trainer, the harder part to overcome is the psychological effect of the injury. It usually takes 2 - 3 years to completely "trust" in your knee again and push yourself to your full capabilities.

We've got the depth, but i don't think any of the new recruits are going to "replace" bowen. I hope it's not as bad as it could possibly be.

Owen Spencer is not too shabby, though.
Bowen doesn't need to be "replaced" anyway, does he? He should be rehabbed in time for football season. He just won't be ready in time for the spring practices.

Can't say for sure what TOB will do, but I wouldn't be surprised if Brandon Barnes doesn't end up as a slot receiver like Darrell Blackman used to be. When he was in high school, he was the main receiving threat from from a half back position. I don't see TOB moving a true freshman into major playing time if he can "reposition" players he already has. But Toney Baker probably has to be back in the mix at RB for this to possibly happen.

This will not hurt the 'Pack this season. Bowens played how many games last season? Zero. Owen Spencer is the deep threat, as long as he can hold on to the ball, if he can, there is no DB who can cover him. This is really a non-story from WRAL, as usual. TOB will still get it done.
