The search is under way for N.C. State’s next women’s basketball coach, with interim coach Stephanie Glance one candidate in what could be an extensive search.

N.C. State posted the job opening on Feb. 9.

"We’re doing a nationwide search," Wolfpack Athletics Director Lee Fowler said.

Fowler says Glance is a candidate for the position, but N.C. State will wait until the season is over to begin fully screening candidates.

"Until people start losing in the NCAA Tournament, we can’t start interviewing candidates," Fowler said. "We just want to get the best coach we can possibly get."

Fowler praised Glance for her work as interim head coach. Glance took over the program when long-time coach Kay Yow stepped down due to health problems in early January. Yow died Jan. 24 after a long bout with breast cancer.

"It’s a difficult situation for anybody," Fowler said of Glance’s work as interim coach. "She has gone through this process very well."

N.C. State is required to post the opening for 30 days.

Glance said she is definitely interested in the position.

"I’d like to be a candidate for the position. I’ve expressed that," Glance said. "But beyond that, I’m really focused on this year’s team."

Glance said this season has been a difficult one because of Yow’s passing, and so her "concern and focus" has been on the players and program, not what might happen in the future.

How's that for gratitude? Maybe someone needs to evaluate the AD..

so, im assuming you all have good ideas of who would be a good choice for this job?

bash, when was the last time the womens team made any strides? That run they made in 2006, that's about it. When was their last ACC title? Also when were they 3rd in the ACC? Come on folks, we need to go out and find a good head coach. Let's not be emotional about this, and hire Glance. Glance had done an amazing job, but she is not the best candidate for this job. That is all I am saying, and yes, if she was hired it would be because she was the loyal asst. who kept the team going after Yow passed away.

I think Coach Glance has done an amazing job under these circumstances, but I dont think she should be the choice to lead this program into the future. We need to go out and find a proven head coach. You never hire the loyal asst. coach, it doesnt work out. Alot of you on here, are putting your emotions into these posts. She should get a look, but I dont think she is the best candidate. I think we have become so irrelevant in most of our sports, I think hiring Glance will just continue this trend, and this womens program will continue to be in the bottom of the league, just because we wanted to honor coach Yow, and keep Glance as our head coach. Do the right think Lee Fowler, and get a proven head coach, to lead the program.

This isn't about honoring Coach Yow; this is about respecting the job an assistant coach has done for the program (mostly behind the scenes). Just out of curiosity, PACKFAN08, how many games have you seen? The Lady Wolfpack will probably head to the ACC tournament ranked 9th which is the lowest in 6 years (and understandably). They've ranked as high as 3rd. I wouldn't say they continue to be at the bottom of the league.

Personal emotions should never be a part of this hiring. NCSU should look at all angles before hiring a new coach. Coach Glance has done a great job during this terrible time. She should be applauded for how she has handled this but I do not think it should be a given that since she was assistant coach she should now be head coach. Who knows, after all the interviews, she may come up to be the best choice. If I were her that is the way I would wish to be hired not just given to me because I was Kay Yow's assistant.
