Palmer 'pleased and proud' of new course at NCSU
By Dane Huffman Jul 31, 2009
Golf legend Arnold Palmer visited N.C. State Friday to christen the new Lonnie Poole Golf Course, which was designed by his company.
“I’m very pleased and proud of what’s happened here,” said Palmer, who played at Wake Forest before going on to a sensational PGA career.
The Lonnie Poole Golf Course is at N.C. State’s Centennial Campus is the home for the N.C. State men’s and women’s golf teams. The par 71 course is open to the public and features views of the Raleigh skyline.
The course was designed by Arnold Palmer’s Palmer Course Design Company.
Palmer said his design team did the bulk of the work but added, “I helped them a little.”
Poole is a Raleigh businessman whose company is Waste Industries.
The course will also be a focal point for research within the NCSU colleges of Natural Resources, and Agriculture and Life Sciences and also a central lab for State’s Turfgrass Management and Professional Golf Management Programs.
Dr. Jim Woodward, N.C. State’s interim chancellor, said the course “is a living laboratory” for the school.

I'm happy for NC State - they finally have their OWN golf course, and just in time to host the Jimmy V - PERFECT timing. They were joking on TV that Arnie deliberately made it a tough course as a Wake Forest Alumni to Wolfpack Nation. But, he did do the "wolf" sign, showing what a great sport he is.

Welcome to Raleigh Mr. Palmer. You are a touch of class for this city. From all appearances, the golf course looks phenominal. I look forward to playing it soon.
Thank you for coming to State

You mean welcome
back to Raleigh, Mr. Palmer. He went to school
in Wake Forest, and came to town and to NC State many times. This area was his home for a time.

Played the course 2 weeks ago and it is Great! Greens are beautiful with a lot of tough breaks. Very tough and will only get tougher as the natural habitats grow in and the rough matures. Hole #3 (501-yd par 4 from the white tees!) will get your attention pretty quickly. Most unique features are the wild grasses INSIDE the bunkers. The deep sand is tough enough from the fairway bunkers but playing the smart shot from these areas will be required. Heroic shot attempts will be punished more times than not.
Great job by Arnie and NCSU! I can't wait to play it again.

I played Saturday and it is a tough course. Listen to the starter! The fee was $75 without alumni membership discount. I graduated, but don't donate! Please note it was well over 5 hour round... Slow play maybe due to some big wigs on the course that day. Thats what they told me at the turn (3 hours). There are some rough spots and questionable layout choices you will notice. The greens are undulating. Front nine is wooded and natural. The back is more open and links style maybe.. Don't miss the fairways! Already said. Go play it once to see and wait for the fees to come back to the recession..

Played there yesterday. It is an amazing course. Twilight fees are great. They start at 3 pm and they are $35 for 18 with cart. Have a tee time already set for Monday afternoon.
