Golf legend Arnold Palmer visited N.C. State Friday to christen the new Lonnie Poole Golf Course, which was designed by his company.
“I’m very pleased and proud of what’s happened here,” said Palmer, who played at Wake Forest before going on to a sensational PGA career.
The Lonnie Poole Golf Course is at N.C. State’s Centennial Campus is the home for the N.C. State men’s and women’s golf teams. The par 71 course is open to the public and features views of the Raleigh skyline.
The course was designed by Arnold Palmer’s Palmer Course Design Company.
Palmer said his design team did the bulk of the work but added, “I helped them a little.”
Poole is a Raleigh businessman whose company is Waste Industries.
The course will also be a focal point for research within the NCSU colleges of Natural Resources, and Agriculture and Life Sciences and also a central lab for State’s Turfgrass Management and Professional Golf Management Programs.
Dr. Jim Woodward, N.C. State’s interim chancellor, said the course “is a living laboratory” for the school.
