Lowe 'feels bad' for actions following Georgia Tech loss
By Tim Hall Feb 8, 2010
N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe did something he had never done before in his coaching career on Saturday. He left the court after the game so quickly he didn't congratulate Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt or his players in the hand shake line.
Lowe's bunch trailed by 16 points and looked dead in the water. But a great rally fueled by tremendous full court defensive pressure gave his team multiple chances to steal a victory in the final minute. Julius Mays found himself with the ball at the top of the key with a three-point attempt to win at the buzzer. It bounced off the front of the iron and the Wolfpack lost, 73-71.
The Wolfpack coach stormed around the court pleading with the officials for a foul call. Iman Shumpert had his arm extended when Mays' last shot went into the air.
"You all saw it, you tell me what you thought," Lowe said after the game. "I felt that he got fouled. They didn't call it and I was a little upset with that. Now we move on."
Lowe talked about the situation on his weekly teleconference on Monday.
"No, I've never done that before in my life," Lowe said. "I feel bad that I did that, certainly no disrespect. In fact before I met with the media I went to Georgia Tech's locker room and congratulated Paul and apologized to Paul, which was important for me to do.
"It was just a situation where you're in the heat of the battle, the heat of the moment. You're kids work their tail off to get back in the game and have a chance. I felt we should've maybe been on the line shooting to tie or win the ball game. I just got caught up, just got caught up. But I've never reacted that way [before] ever."
Lowe tried some different things in his starting lineup. Freshman Richard Howell used his strong play in recent practices to take away a normal starting spot from senior Dennis Horner. Freshman Josh Davis also started while Mays came off the bench. Horner scored 14 points and had a productive game coming off the bench.
"That's a good thing, you know. Sometimes that's what it takes for guys to wake up and be ready to go," Lowe said.
Wolfpack guard Farnold Degand missed the Georgia Tech game. He watched the game in street clothes on the bench after taking a knee to the thigh in practice. Degand did not practice with the team today and he is currently listed as day-to-day.

Singing the same old tune this year. You are defending him again. Look at your 2nd paragraph closely. Have you seen major improvement this year? Same old, same old.

Your rant sounds less like a State fan's more like a Carolina or Duke fan's that is trying to keep down NC State basketball.
You asked why Javi was riding the pine. Because Sidney was true to his word that he would play the best player each game. Mays was the better player in practice that week, and he was the better player that day on the court. THAT is why Javi was on the bench.
You also say that next year is not looking good? By what standard? State's recruiting class is ranked in the top 15 by Rivals.com I believe. And we're not finished yet. If Sid pulls off a miracle and pulls in Walls, we'll have a top five class next year. But with fans like you, it makes it more difficult to pull in someone like Walls. And what do you think will happen if we fire Sidney now? We'll lose ALL those good recruits.
You need to give it a rest and back Sidney for at least one more year. If we don't see MAJOR improvement next year, I'll join you in calling for his resignation.

When did I say next year was not looking good? I think with our incoming recruiting class, we MIGHT be pretty good. But I think we'd be BETTER with someone else coaching them.
I have defended Sidney until I was blue in the face -- here and on StateFansNation.com (which I affectionately refer to as "HateFansNation.com" because of all the Sid-haters over there). Only recently did I stop defending Sidney and take a "watch, wait and see" approach. But when I saw what happened last night, and in EACH of the last five conference games, we're just getting murdered. I don't see Sidney doing ANYTHING wrong OR right. I have determined that I think he is in over his head. All too often, the opposing coach makes adjustments at halftime, and we don't handle it well. Sid is getting outcoached. Players are not fundamentally sound as they should be. It's just looking more and more like a trainwreck. I'm sorry, I used to make the SAME argument you're making about losing recruits. And that is the ONLY reason I can think of for keeping Sidney one more year. I'll be OK with that if we do, but I'd rather bring in a BETTER coach and take our chances with this group of recruits. Think of players as tires. Yes, we need good ones. But the coach is the ENGINE. We're driving a clunker right now with some pretty good tires on it. I'd rather have a Porsche and sacrifice a tire or two for now, knowing we'll be getting more tires soon enough.

I don't defend Lowe.
But that has nothing to do with the decision to let Herb walk. That was necessary if we were ever going to be anything again in college basketball. We didn't dump Sendek for Lowe. Lowe was our 4th or 5th choice. We HAD to hire someone at that point. I think Lowe MAY be alright next year with this year's players being a year older, plus the kids he has coming in. Time will tell on that. But letting Herb go was the best thing we've done in a LONG time in NC State athletics.

He should feel bad. He should feel even worse for all the losses they have this year. The pack may not win another game this year.

You talk about all the games that he lost, but you dont about the ones that he has won. So lets be real here. What was your expectation of this team before they ever play one single game ? It was probably exactly the same as the sports writer & talking heads. Dead last in the ACC. And i seriously doubt that they will finish last. But lets look at the talent on this team. What is the most important player to any good or great teams ? The PG ! Does Gonz or Mays, Degand has PG skills ? No they dont. Is Horner a PF ? No once again. How about a SF ? On the offense side yes, but on the defense he is not. Smith is really a PF that is playing the center position. Howell & Wood is very promising player with a solid PG. So next yr with Harrow & Brown & probably CJ Lesilie will make this team a very good team. But no coach can win without some really good talent around him.

JUST WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!!!
Aren't you as sick as I am of this sorry excuse?

I guess all that you & other fair weather fans care about is going to the NCAAs over ACC reg. & tournment titles. So lets get into your talking points excuses. Fact 1. Lowe lost his 1st yr due to no fault of his own with the entire incoming recuriting class beside Horner. 2. The talent level that he inherted was well below ACC standard besides Costner & Grant, Smith. But everybody else was either role player or mid major player at best. 3. The team developement was a big set back due to a few jealious player underminding the coach. 4. Progress is happening right now but the team talent level is still not there. But next yr the rebuilding process will be over if CJ Lesilie comes to State. So give him his same chance like we did with Sendek. 6 yrs !

Dude- that makes NO sense. You always say what a great recruiter he is since we don't have any argument about his coaching skills (none).
HWSNBN went to the NCAAT 3 consecutive years before leaving. He left a midlevel ACC team (EASY) at Low's disposal. Low disposed it. He blamed his players incessantly til they all left (many of them early). He then brought in his own players. He installed no offense and nobody plays defense nor have they been taught fundamentals. He still throws kids under the bus.
Fact 1: 10th in conference
Fact 2: 12th in conference
Fact 3: 10th in conference
Fact 4: currently 12th in conference.
Larry Harris has been here as an assistant coach for 10 years (focus on recruiting) prior to Low taking over. Low doesn't bring anything to the table except chaos and stinky coaching.
Don't blame the players- these are ALL Low's recruited players.
Logically speaking, do you see a trend? Tell me how great Low is.
Year 1: WTNY
Year 2: WTNY
Year 3: WTNY
Year 4: WTNY
I do see a trend from you.
