Horner scores 25 and NC State nips USF 58-57
Mar 17, 2010
Dennis Horner scored 25 points and Richard Howell's go-ahead layup with 8 seconds left barely beat the shot clock as North Carolina State defeated South Florida 58-57 in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.
The officials reviewed Howell's basket to see if it beat the shot clock and the call stood.
USF star Dominiques Jones had a look for a last shot, but passed it to Chris Howard, who then passed it to Augustus Gilchrist, who put up an airball.
The Wolfpack (20-15) trailed for the first 25 minutes of the game as Horner had 14 of NC State's 22 points in the first.
South Florida, (20-13), in its first postseason appearance in more than eight years, had no answer for Horner, who was 10 for 16 from the floor.
Jones led the Bulls with 24 points. North Carolina State advances to play UAB.

I have been watching N.C. State alot the last two weeks - I have changed my mind on Sid Lowe. He has done an outstanding job with this bunch. Dean Smith and John Wooden could not win with these three guards handeling the ball. #24-#10-and #12 could not start for Mount Olive or Barton college. State needs to protect the basketball - our point guards are turnover machines!

This is hillarious! State wins another close game, this time holding on in the final seconds to get a tough road win. USF was rested, State was still fatigued. Horner was a monster out there, and he carried this team. Howell is going to be a STUD - All-ACC by his Jr year - mark it down. Incredible defense. Congrats to the Pack and to Sid! A 20-win season - wow! I didn't expect it. This team has found itself, and exceeded my expectations. With RH and LB coming next year - man I'm ready!
As for the media coverage - it's the NIT....as in "Not-In Tournament". Let the media allocate resources to the tourney that matters. I'm sure if unc was on the road they wouldn't have gotten the coverage they did, and it would be close to what we got. Bottom line - who cares? We won the stinking game! Let's just enjoy that!
Go Pack! Beat UAB!!!

LB decommited yesterday.

No he didn't. That was LC (Luke Cothron (sp.) LB, Lorenzo Brown is coming and is a really good player, as is Harrow.

My mistake. I wasn't sure of the last name I just remebered the ESPN ticker and the "L". What happened on Cothron? Did he start to get some big time attention and bail? I mean that without sarcasm. I can't imagine a much better situation for playing time and visibilty than State as a big man with range.

No, that's not the case at all. He's been getting a lot of attention for a while now. It's not like he jumped to his ranking overnight.
The problem is, he wants to play 35 minutes per game as a freshman. With the emergence of Richard Howell, and Tracy Smith returning and not trying for the NBA a year early, and the POSSIBILITY that CJ Leslie might be here, he KNOWS he's going to be riding the pine a lot. He wants to be the star of his team, and that isn't going to happen. State is stocked at his position next year.
It's probably for the best that he de-committed. State can't give him the playing time he wants. And who wants a player that is scared to compete for what playing time he gets anyway?
He'd provide some good depth at State if he had honored his commitment. But we can absorb this recruiting loss. We need LB and RH a lot more than LC. And if this helps us land CJ Leslie, even better. CJL is an upgrade to Cothron.

LB = Lorenzo Brown (signed his LOI in the early signing period).
LC = Luke Cothron. He de-committed. And it's not a problem. Read up on his reasons. He knows he won't get much playing time (which is a good thing, meaning we have enough depth and talent to keep his top-50 talented azz on the bench!)

The picture pretty much sums up the whole event. It doesn't matter. We are still 11th place. There is no doubt that the 5 or so people in the background who are trying to take up as much space as possible are being paid to sit there.
Even to USF, this was not anything to be proud of. Coverage was about as much as deserved. If WRAL paid somebody to watch the game, that's more than good enough. Actually if they paid somebody to read the box score, that would be good enough. This is just a party tour for a bunch of bad teams.
If we are NIT champions, I would still be embarrassed even though it would be good beating the Tarholes. Any day, anywhere. Surely, lightening doesn't strike 3 times.

Still pretending to be a Wolfpack fan, I see?
Who's your real team? Duke? Carolina? Come on, inquiring minds want to know!
