N.C. State's Rashard Smith has season-ending knee surgery
By Erin Summers Jul 27, 2010
N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien told 99.9FM The Fan's Adam Gold and Joe Ovies Monday that cornerback Rashard Smith has had a season-ending knee surgery.
The surgery became necessary this offseason after lingering knee pain following an injury Smith suffered in the Boston College game last season.
O'Brien said Smith will red-shirt this season as it looks to be the same injury that Toney Baker suffered, an injury that cost Baker two years of playing time.
Smith was projected to start for the Pack for the 2010-11 season after playing five games last season.
He had 11 tackles as a true freshman in 2009, his backup, Jordan Monk, played in only two games last year.

Today's N&O says Smith "had surgery last week to repair a cartilage problem." The article also says, "Regarding the rash of the injuries, O'Brien said his staff has analyzed the way NC State athletes are trained, coached and treated but hasn't been able to come with a reason that so many players have been hurt." "They're all different things," O'Brien said, "And they're not things that are caused by any one source."
The injury bug is a disappointment for each player injured, the team, the coaching staff, and the fans. Just when you think things are getting better....

Agreed. Hate to see a young person with a potentially career ending injury.
