State: Interest high in head coach job

A member of the search committee tasked with identifying the next men’s basketball coach for North Carolina State University issued a statement Thursday to select members of the media saying “a number of talented Division I coaches have indicated strong interest in the position.”

Sidney Lowe stepped down on March 15 after five years in the position.

The university has retained the services of the Parker Executive Search firm to help select his replacement.

On Thursday, Sports Illustrated’s Seth Davis reported that Memphis head coach Josh Pastner had turned down a $2.5 million dollar offer from NC State.

In light of conflicting reports about who may or may not be a part of the NC State coaching search, Chris Kingston, senior associate athletic director, said he was trying to clarify the hiring process.

He wrote, “As those conversations have occurred, coaches have naturally inquired about the potential compensation commitment of State, as would occur in any type of job search. Responding to those compensation questions is not the equivalent of ’offering the job’ to anyone. Instead, it is simply sharing information that reflects the commitment of State to the men’s basketball program.”

During Lowe’s resignation press conference NCSU Director of Athletics Debbie Yow said the university will be making contacts through the search firm, but an element of patience is required for the process.

Yow said the list included a single-digit number of candidates. No specific numbers were given as to how much NC State is willing to pay a new coach. Yow said there are things she would offer to some coaches that she would not offer to other coaches, based on the level of experience a coach has and how much success he has seen.

Well, I am not worried. There always is some misinformation in this process. As Valvano always said, "I want someone who wants to be here." Lowe wanted to be here, but many of our fans said no. But had we not chased Caliparo all over the US, we would had a good coach then. So we will see.

another swing and miss for Yow. Smart turns down state.

I can't believe he's calling CJ Leslie elite talent. Maybe in Leslie's mind, but that's about it.

He didn't have the great year we hoped for. Although for much of the season, there was still talk about him being in the running for freshman of the year. And he was sought after by schools like Kentucky. He was elite talent coming out of high school. You CANNOT argue against that. Your argument is that top talent doesn't want to come here, but clearly, they do. Elite talent sometimes arrives and lets you down, but he still chose NC State over Kentucky (and MANY others) when he was considered to be a top talent.

And THAT is the point of this discussion.

Kentucky made the Final 4 without CJ Leslie.

NC ST didn't even make the NIT.

CJ Leslie is NOT an elite talent.

If he was, he'd be at Duke, Carolina, Kentucky, etc.

improving? LOL, how so? Are you saying that getting shot down by every major coach you've "offered" is improving? LOL.

So since you are obviously on the search committee could you please enlighten us about who the next offer will go to since we have apparently offered it to so many people. If this is the case how come nobody else has said they've turned it down? You're just worried about where the Wolfpack BBall program is heading with Yow at the helm of the athletics department. State has already asserted dominance in Football. You're scared it will happen in BBall. Keep telling yourself whatever helps you sleep at night.

It's sad that wolpfack fans have convinced themselves they havent been turned down by anyone even though Yow said targets she was looking at were STILL coaching in the tournament (note, that was before Shaka's big run so far). she said the hire was going to be a homerun (note, a mid-major coach is not a homerun). now we've had reports that these elite coaches have turned down State, yet wolpfack fans STILL maintain they havent been turned down by anyone. Like I said before, keep living in whatever dream world you've constructed. The rest of us will point and laugh at all of you.

What is sad is that you think the process of talking to 50 coaches to get a feel for who is or might be interested results in "turning down" State (e.g., Pastner). Obviously, every coach in the nation is not going to be interested in going anywhere (including NC State). You figure out the ones that are, then you go from there.

Trust me, if we wanted a guy like Paster, and threw a serious offer his way, he'd be wearing the red blazer right now. That goes for a LOT of guys. But we're not going to pay them more than they're worth. So essentially, we're turning THEM down.

Keep telling yourself that, sunshine!

What is it now, 15, 16 schools have already named coaching replacements?

Yet the interest is "high" for the NC ST position? Hmmm...

Calipari's season is now over, give him a call! LOL!
