Carolina Panthers

Newton: We refused to give up

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton spoke Thursday with Adam Gold and Joe Ovies on 99.9FM The Fan at Radio Row in New York on how the Panthers can improve next year.

The Panthers had a disappointing 1-3 start on the 2013 season, but turned their season around with some great wins ending first in the NFC South with 12 wins and 4 losses. The Panthers lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the playoffs.

“It’s a credit to great coaching and unbelievable players that refuse to give up,” said Newton. “A thing that we could get better at is not starting 1-3.”

Newton said the Panthers can improve next season by continuing to evolve as a team.

“If we don’t put a lot of pressure on ourselves,” Newton said. “We’ll be looking great.”

One thing that has improved is getting wide receiver Steve Smith back after missing two games with a knee injury.

“We hope to keep having him,” Newton said, “because Smith plays an intricate role in our offense.”

He also said that the winning took care of the criticism he and his teammates got during the start of the season.

“We play the sport for one reason and one reason only,” said Newton. “We play to win and winning is the best cure for anything, even criticism.”

Hope the Panthers can find a way to keep the important players like Hardy, Gano, Gross, LaFell, Mitchell, etc. because those players all contributed to the Panthers having a winning season.
