NFL Game Summary - Kansas City at Philadelphia

(Thursday, September 19th)

Final Score: Kansas City 26, Philadelphia 16

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - On Thursday, the time was his.

The Philadelphia Eagles introduced Andy Reid onto the field prior to the game and the fans, who've had a love-hate relationship with him during his 14-year stay, showed some Brotherly Love and gave him a standing ovation.

Then Reid's Kansas City Chiefs went out and surpassed their 2012 win total as they forced five turnovers in their 26-16 triumph over the Eagles.

Kansas City (3-0) is the fifth team in NFL history to win its first three games after dropping 14 the prior season.

The Eagles hired a relatively unknown Reid, who was never an offensive coordinator in the NFL, on Jan. 11, 1999 after he spent seven seasons under Mike Holmgren's watch with the Green Bay Packers. At the time Reid, who was 41 years old, was the second youngest coach in the NFL. Only Jon Gruden of the Oakland Raiders was younger.

Big Red proceeded to become the team's winningest coach. He led the Birds to a 130-93-1 regular-season mark, six NFC East titles, five NFC Championship Game appearances and one Super Bowl appearance.

Reid, though, went just 12-20 over his final two seasons in Philly and the Eagles decided to part ways with their longtime coach on Dec. 31.

"I appreciate the fans and the support that they gave," Reid said. "I enjoyed every minute here."

Justin Houston tallied 4 1/2 of the Chiefs' six sacks and Eric Berry had a 38- yard interception return for a touchdown for Kansas City, which has not turned the ball over this season after leading the NFL with a minus-24 turnover ratio in 2012.

Jamaal Charles carried the ball 20 times for 92 yards and a touchdown and added seven receptions for 80 yards. Donnie Avery hauled in seven receptions for 141 yards and Alex Smith completed 22-of-35 passes for 273 yards in the victory.

LeSean McCoy ran for 158 yards and a score on 20 carries for Philadelphia (1-2), which dropped its second straight after winning its opener in Washington against the Redskins.

Michael Vick was 13-of-30 passing for 201 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, while tallying 95 yards rushing in defeat.

"You can't turn the ball over like that in this league and expect to win," Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said of his team's five turnovers. "We can move the ball up and down the field, I think we've proven that, but if we're going to put the ball on the ground as we did a couple times in the first half and throw interceptions that's not going to win football for us."

The Eagles have dropped eight consecutive tilts at Lincoln Financial Field.

McCoy's 41-yard touchdown scamper along the left sideline pulled the Eagles within 23-16 with 11:36 remaining, but the Chiefs' ensuing drive took 8:15 off the clock.

Avery, who hauled in four third-down targets for 104 yards, moved the chains on a 3rd-and-10 with a 15-yard reception, and Dwayne Bowe had a 4-yard catch to again move the sticks on a 3rd-and-1 before Ryan Succop finished off the elongated 15-play, 75-yard march with a 38-yard field goal to make it 26-16 with 3:21 left.

Philadelphia then turned the ball over on downs to essentially seal the outcome.

Earlier, the Chiefs jumped out to a 10-0 start despite tallying minus-four yards offensively.

Kansas City punted on its first touch but got the ball back following a Damaris Johnson muffed catch on a punt. This led to a 33-yard Succop field goal and Berry's interception return for a score on Philly's next touch gave the Chiefs their 10-point cushion.

Vick broke off a career-high 61-yard run on the Eagles' next possession, which led to a Jason Avant 22-yard TD catch in the back left corner of the end zone. The subsequent two-point try was unsuccessful.

Succop booted through a pair of field goals, 31 and 34 yards, respectively, in the second quarter to give Kansas City a 16-6 edge heading into the break.

Alex Henery split the uprights from 29 yards out midway through the third to get the Eagles within 16-9, but Charles' 3-yard TD run early in the fourth again made it a two-possession game.

Game Notes

The Eagles retired Donovan McNabb's No. 5 at halftime ... Kansas City was 6-of-18 on third down, while the Eagles finished 3-for-10 on third down ... DeSean Jackson caught three passes for 62 yards for Philadelphia.
