NFL Game Summary - Dallas at Houston

(Sunday, September 26th)

Final Score: Dallas 27, Houston 13

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Tony Romo threw two touchdown passes to Roy Williams, as the Dallas Cowboys picked up a much-needed victory by beating the Houston Texans, 27-13, at Reliant Stadium.

Romo turned in a solid performance, completing 23-of-30 tosses for 284 yards. Williams had five receptions for 117 yards for the Cowboys (1-2), who avoided dropping their first three games of the year for the first time since 2001.

"It was a big win for this football team," Williams said. "Everyone counted us out all week and changed their Super Bowl predictions. We took that in and went out there and played ball."

Matt Schaub threw for 241 yards on 23-of-32 attempts with one touchdown and two interceptions for the Texans (2-1), who were aiming to start a season 3-0 for the first time in franchise history. Arian Foster finished the game with 106 yards on 17 carries.

"We struggled today. We made mistakes. We weren't very good in the red zone. We hurt ourselves with some big penalties," said Houston head coach Gary Kubiak.

The Cowboys went for it on fourth down twice on the game's opening drive, opting against a field goal and stalling at the Houston 29-yard line.

Houston crossed midfield on its first possession but was forced to punt. The Texans marched into Dallas territory on their next series. The big play coming when Foster took a delayed handoff and converted a 3rd-and-19 with a 21-yard run to the Cowboys' 32. On the next play, Schaub hit Andre Johnson on a screen pass and he rumbled to the six, but the Texans were forced to settle for a 24-yard field goal by Neil Rackers four minutes into the second quarter.

Romo and the Cowboys responded on the subsequent series, engineering a 13-play drive that began with an illegal blocking penalty negating a 32-yard reception by Felix Jones. Dallas overcame the mistake, converting a trio of lengthy third downs en route to a one-yard TD run from Marion Barber.

Dallas got the ball back after a punt, and David Buehler drilled a 49-yard field goal as the half expired to put the Cowboys 10-3.

Following the break, cornerback Mike Jenkins picked off Schaub -- the first takeaway of the season by the Dallas defense - and the Cowboys converted the turnover into a 15-yard TD pass from Romo to Williams.

Schaub led the Texans to the goal line on the ensuing drive, but successive runs by Foster resulted in a loss of two yards. Dallas linebacker Keith Brooking then sacked Schaub on third down and Rackers trimmed Houston's deficit to 17-6 with a 30-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys increased their lead after Romo and Williams hooked up for a 63- yard TD, and a Foster fumble resulted in Buehler kicking a 40-yarder to make it 27-6.

Schaub hit Kevin Walter for a seven-yard score with 1:15 remaining and Houston recovered the onside kick to keep things interesting. However, any chance of a dramatic comeback were squashed when Danny McCray intercepted a tipped ball thrown by Schaub.
