Bucs release Revis; sign McCown

Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Revis Island has to find another location.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released cornerback Darrelle Revis on Wednesday, less than a year after acquiring him from the New York Jets.

The Bucs received the superstar cornerback from the Jets on Apr. 21 in a trade that netted them a first-round pick and a conditional choice in this year's upcoming NFL Draft -- which will now be a fourth-round selection and not a third-round pick had Tampa not cut Revis by 4:01 p.m. (et) Wednesday.

Revis was also due a $1.5 million roster bonus Wednesday, while Tampa Bay will free up $16 million in salary cap space.

The five-time Pro Bowl cornerback agreed to a six-year contract worth $96 million following last year's trade, but none of that money was guaranteed.

Revis tore his ACL in Week 3 of the 2012 NFL season, his final of a six-year stay with the Jets. He had been considered the top cornerback in the game prior to the injury. earning All-Pro honors from 2009-11.

Revis recorded two interceptions, 11 pass defensed and 50 tackles in his lone campaign with Tampa, which went 4-12 this past season.

"We would like to thank Darrelle for his time and effort with our organization last year," Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said. "Darrelle showed a lot of heart last year as he worked extremely hard to get himself back on the field following his knee injury sustained the previous season. We have specific ideas regarding the best way to build this defense and, while you never like to lose a good player, we believe this is in the best interests of our team moving forward."

In addition to Revis' release, the Bucs signed quarterback Josh McCown to a two-year deal.

McCown was outstanding in eight games while replacing an injured Jay Cutler with the Chicago Bears in 2013, completing 149-of-224 passes (66.5 percent) for 1,829 yards, 13 touchdowns and just one interception. His career-best passer rating of 109.0 ranked third in the NFL behind Philadelphia's Nick Foles (119.2) and Denver's Peyton Manning (115.1).

McCown's arrival also reunites him with new Bucs head coach Lovie Smith, who was at helm of the Bears from 2004-12. McCown signed with the Bears in 2011.

The Bucs haven't reached the playoffs since 2007 and haven't won a postseason game since capturing their lone Super Bowl title after the 2002 campaign.
