Seahawks, Sherman agree on new contract

Renton, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has agreed to a new contract.

"New contract signed! Great moment for my family & foundation," Sherman wrote on his Twitter account Wednesday prior to a press conference.

Sherman disclosed terms of the deal on his personal website, saying it is a four-year contract for a total of $57.4 million with $40 million guaranteed.

"The goal has always been to stay in Seattle and continue to play for the Seahawks," Sherman wrote. "With this chapter closed, I can continue to focus on what is important -- defending our Super Bowl championship and being the best cornerback in the NFL. This is just the beginning and I will continue to set the bar higher and higher on and off the field."

Sherman was entering the final year of his rookie deal and the extension will take him through the 2018 season. He is considered one of the top cover corners in the NFL and last year helped the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl title.

The 26-year-old Stanford product had eight interceptions each of the last two seasons after picking off four passes as a rookie in 2011. He also made the game-sealing play in the end zone in the final seconds of the NFC Championship Game against San Francisco this past January, tipping a pass into the hands of teammate Malcolm Smith for an interception that sewed up a 23-17 victory.

"He's a tremendous teammate," said Seahawks coach Pete Carroll at Wednesday's press conference. "There's nothing more important than that. It makes us proud to recognize that. It's a very, very exciting time for us."

Sherman thanked his family, teammates, coaches and owner Paul Allen at the press conference.

"I'd like to thank Paul Allen for anteing up and paying me," Sherman joked.

The deal comes a week after the Seahawks made Earl Thomas the highest-paid safety with a $40 million deal, $27.725 million of which is guaranteed.
