Predators ink D Volchenkov

Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - The Nashville Predators signed defenseman Anton Volchenkov to a one-year, $1 million contract on Monday.

Volchenkov, 32, became a free agent after the New Jersey Devils decided to buy out the final two years and $8.5 million on the six-year, $25.5 million contract he signed on July 1, 2010.

The Russian had eight assists in 56 games last season.

"Anton provides a strong veteran presence that will complement our young, talented defensive corps nicely," Predators general manager David Poile said. "He is a physical, left-handed shooting defenseman who can match up with top- line forwards and effectively kill penalties."

A 2000 first-round pick of Ottawa, Volchenkov has totaled 19 goals and 107 assists in 650 career games with the Senators and Devils.
