NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Tuesday, March 11th (All times Eastern)

New York Rangers (35-26-4) at Carolina Hurricanes (27-28-9), 7 p.m.

(SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Rangers look to capture a third straight victory on Tuesday night when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes for the second time in less than a week.

The Rangers have followed up an 0-2-1 skid with consecutive wins, including a 4-2 win at Carolina on Friday. They followed up that victory with a 3-0 blanking of the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday in a big game for goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

Lundqvist's 30 saves helped him capture the 300th victory of his career, leaving him one shy of matching Mike Richter for the most in franchise history. His 49th career shutout also matched Ed Giacomin's club record.

"It's well deserved," New York forward Chris Kreider said of Lundqvist reaching 300 wins. "He's the best goalie in the world. Hopefully he'll get 300 more."

Kreider scored a pair of third-period goals and Brian Boyle opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game for the Blueshirts, who have a slim one- point lead over Philadelphia for second place in the Metropolitan Division.

New York kicks off a span of three straight and six of its next seven on the road in a city where it just won last week. Derek Stepan and Rick Nash had goal and an assist in the 4-2 win, while Lundqvist made 22 saves.

Anton Khudobin had 40 saves and the Hurricanes got goals from Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner, but still lost for the 10th straight time to the Rangers. That includes the first two of four meetings this season.

New York has not lost to the 'Canes since Jan. 20, 2011 in Raleigh, winning six straight as the guest in this series.

Carolina followed up that loss with a 5-4 setback to the New Jersey Devils on Saturday. Jay Harrison, Nathan Gerbe and Alexander Semin all scored to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Devils got the winner from former Hurricane forward Tuomo Ruutu with 6:30 remaining.

Semin also had an assist and Skinner scored as well, but Carolina lost for the seventh time in eight games.

"It takes a full 60 minutes to get the win at the end of the night and tonight we fell just short of that," Carolina defenseman Ron Hainsey said. "We need to go all the way if we want to get some wins."

Khudobin allowed four goals on 22 shots before being removed midway through the second period, with Cam Ward stopping 8-of-9 shots in relief.

Carolina's current skid has dropped the 'Canes eight points out of a wild card spot.
