NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Ottawa

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Ales Hemsky scored the lone goal of the shootout as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-1, on Monday.

Hemsky, Ottawa's second shooter, patiently skated up the slot and wristed a shot off the post and past Carolina goaltender Cam Ward. Senators netminder Craig Anderson turned aside Jeff Skinner and gloved Elias Lindholm's offering to ensure Ottawa's third straight win.

"All I'm doing is going game-by-game still," Senators head coach Paul MacLean said of his team's playoff chances.

Mika Zibanejad scored for Ottawa in regulation and Anderson stopped 30-of-31 Carolina shots in the win.

Jeff Skinner extended his goal streak to four straight games while Ward made 28 saves for the Hurricanes, who have dropped three of their last four.

Ottawa needed only 1:41 to solve Ward. Patrick Wiercioch fired a shot from the right point. Zibanejad crashed the net and the puck deflected off him and past Ward. The goal went under review to see if Zibanejad kicked the puck into the net, but it was deemed a good goal.

"As much as you like to take goals back, you can't," said Ward. "I thought it probably could have probably either way on the video replay, but from what I understand he didn't have a kicking motion. You have to look at it as a lucky break on their side."

Skinner responded for Carolina 2:22 later. Skinner took the puck behind the net and sent the puck towards the slot, but it bounced off Ottawa defenseman Erik Karlsson's skate and past Anderson to make it a 1-1 game.

Both teams picked up a point as neither team scored in the second or third and the game went to overtime. Anderson stopped 12 shots in the third.

The two teams played 3-on-3 hockey after Eric Gryba and Nathan Gerbe both received roughing minors due to a scrum in the crease with just over two minutes to play in the extra session. Alexander Semin fired a shot off a 2- on-1 with 12 seconds left in overtime, but Anderson stood tall to send the game into a shootout.

Game Notes

Skinner extended his point streak to five games ... Ottawa has picked up a point in each of its last five games (4-0-1) ... The Senators host the Islanders on Wednesday ... Carolina will travel to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
