NHL Game Summary - Boston at Detroit

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Tomas Jurco tied the game and Gustav Nyquist won it with goals 1:42 apart in the latter stages of the third period, as Detroit downed Boston, 3-2 at Joe Louis Arena, ending the Bruins' nine-game road win streak.

Tomas Tatar added a second-period goal and Jimmy Howard came up with 33 saves for the Red Wings, winners of three in a row and six of their last nine.

"Goaltending was good, we survived and found a way to get playing and skating a little bit. We were fortunate enough to be opportunistic and get some goals," said Red Wings coach Mike Babcock.

Detroit moved three points ahead of idle Columbus for the top wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Johnny Boychuk and Carl Soderberg tallied for the Bruins, who suffered their first regulation loss since March 1 against Washington. Tuukka Rask stopped only 17 pucks in defeat.

"It sucks. We don't want to lose game. It doesn't matter if you win 20 in a row, a loss is a loss," said Rask. "Especially when you lose in the third period it sucks. We have a new one tomorrow and have to get over this."

Soderberg scored to the short side from the top of the left circle and the Bruins led 2-1 with 70 seconds played in the third. The marker came towards the end of a carry-over hooking minor to Detroit's Darren Helm.

The game was tied inside of nine minutes to play. In a goalmouth scramble, Tatar managed to kick the puck, while being restrained, to Jurco, who hit the open net from the right side of the crease with 8:54 left in regulation.

Nyquist then turned on the jets and moved around Bruins captain Zdeno Chara before beating Rask from the slot at 12:48 and the Wings led by a goal.

Boston had an extra attacker in the final 1:26 of the contest but couldn't get one past Howard.

Thanks to a Chara screen, Torey Krug's left-point shot beat Howard to the far post with a little over four minutes remaining in the first period, but the goal was waved off due to incidental contact. Replays showed that Chara did not interfere with Howard, though.

Boychuk's blast from the right point made it through traffic just over a minute later and the visitors went to intermission up by one.

Detroit equalized at the end of a Patrice Bergeron hooking minor, as Tatar's rising shot settled inside the far post at 4:45 of the second.

Game Notes

Detroit improved to 8-4-0 at home against the Bruins since 1995, and have taken four straight since November of 2009 ... Boston last lost on the road at Buffalo on Feb. 26 (5-4 OT) ... Bruins defenseman Dougie Hamilton played in his 100th NHL game ... The Red Wings scratched forward Daniel Alfredsson, while the Bruins were without forward Jarome Iginla.
