NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Detroit

(Friday, April 11th)

Final Score: Carolina 2, Detroit 1

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Elias Lindholm and Jiri Tlusty scored first- period goals as the Carolina Hurricanes held off the Red Wings, 2-1, to pick up their first regular-season win in Detroit since 1989.

Cam Ward stopped 28-of-29 shots for the Hurricanes, who won in Detroit for the first time since Nov. 14, 1989, when the franchise was still known as the Hartford Whalers.

Jimmy Howard turned aside 17-of-19 shots for the Red Wings, who remained tied with Columbus for the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Blue Jackets lost to the Lightning on Friday.

Detroit has already clinched its 23rd straight postseason berth.

Detroit was called for too many men on the ice to set up a Carolina power play at 7:34 of the first period. Less than a minute later, Lindholm scored from the side of the net to make it a 1-0 game.

Tlusty made it 2-0 with 1:36 left in the first when he put home a rebound off Eric Staal's shot from the right circle.

"It was a solid effort," Staal said. "We needed to respond after last night's game."

Riley Sheahan finally got the Red Wings on the board at 3:43 of the third. He jammed home the puck following a scramble in front of the net during a power play.

"At one point we had a 4-on-3, they had a 3-on-1, we had a 3-on-2. That's not how we play. That's river hockey. That's not how we're going to have success," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.
