NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Ottawa

(Thursday, April 10th)

Final Score: Ottawa 2, New Jersey 1 (SO)

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - If only New Jersey found success in the shootout.

A day after being eliminated from playoff contention, the Devils' woes in the tiebreaker continued.

Erik Karlsson netted the lone shootout goal as the Ottawa Senators clipped New Jersey, 2-1, at Canadian Tire Centre.

The Devils reached a shootout Thursday for the 12th time this season and squandered precious points by losing all 12. The club has dropped an NHL- record 16 consecutive shootouts overall.

"It's frustrating, no question about it," said New Jersey forward Jaromir Jagr. "(The shootout) probably cost us the playoffs, but you've got no other choice but to work on it."

Robin Lehner made 38 saves for Ottawa, which was also eliminated from postseason contention this week.

"Guys understand that we're expected to battle and to try to win every night," said Senators captain Jason Spezza.

Cory Schneider finished with 31 saves for the Devils, who will miss the playoffs for the second year in a row after reaching the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals.

The teams traded second-period goals.

Mike Hoffman, trailing the rush, handled Mika Zibanejad's pass and beat Schneider on a shot from the slot at 11:20.

The goal came 32 seconds after Schneider had stopped Ales Hemsky on a penalty shot.

Michael Ryder lit the lamp on a delayed penalty with 2:34 remaining in the second.

Game Notes

The Senators registered the 400th home win in team history ... Schneider has allowed two or fewer goals in seven straight starts ... New Jersey forward Patrik Elias returned to the lineup after missing two games with a head injury ... Ottawa forward Colin Greening was back from a lower-body injury that cost him six games.
