NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Monday, December 23rd (All times Eastern)

St. Louis Blues (24-7-4) at Calgary Flames (13-17-6), 8 p.m.

(SportsNetwork.com) - Alexander Steen has been the gift that keeps on giving this season, but the St. Louis Blues are expected to be without their leading scorer in their final game before the Christmas break.

Steen is expected to sit out on Monday night, when the Blues go for a third straight victory in a meeting with the Calgary Flames.

The current season as seen Steen already match a career high with 24 goals, a performance that recently earned him a three-year contract extension. However, the forward exited Saturday's 6-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers early with an upper-body injury.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Steen is day-to-day and will not play tonight. The Blues have already recalled forward Dmitrij Jaskin from Chicago of the American Hockey League.

A second-round pick in 2011, Jaskin has nine goals and eight assists this season with the Wolves in 20 games.

Steen's injury puts a damper on a solid victory over the Oilers, one that featured Chris Stewart's third career hat trick. Stewart scored twice during a four-goal third period and set up another tally, while Jaden Schwartz and Patrik Berglund also scored and added an assist each.

"A huge credit goes to my linemates. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and they teed it up for me," said Stewart.

Brian Elliott made 23 saves for his second shutout of the season and 23rd of his career as St. Louis moved to 5-1-1 in its last seven games.

The Flames are also battling some injuries ahead of this game, having lost forward Curtis Glencross and defenseman Kris Russell in Saturday's 4-3 setback to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Glencross left early in the first period with a lower-body injury and was placed on injured reserve. He missed 15 games earlier this season with a knee injury and has six goals and six assists in 21 contests this season.

Russell, meanwhile, sustained a lower-body injury late in the third period. His status for this game is unknown, but blueliner Derek Smith was recalled from Abbotsford of the AHL to replace Glencross on the roster.

Calgary got goals from Paul Byron, Mike Cammalleri and Jiri Hudler in Saturday's loss, while Karri Ramo stopped 19-of-23 shots faced.

"The third period was strong, for sure," said Cammalleri. "I thought we did a lot of good things and put some pressure on them and had some pretty close ones. Those are the bounces."

Still, Calgary closed out a five-game road trip with a fourth straight loss (0-2-2) and will play its next five at home.

The Blues have won two straight and six of their last eight versus the Flames, including a 3-2 victory at home on Nov. 7. Steen scored his 14th goal of the season in the win.
