NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Los Angeles

(Saturday, March 1st)

Final Score: Los Angeles 3, Carolina 1

Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Alec Martinez scored a go-ahead goal in the third period to help lift the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at Staples Center.

Jonathan Quick turned away 24 Carolina shots as the Kings won their fourth straight game.

Anton Khudobin made 28 saves, but the Hurricanes dropped their fourth game in a row, the last three coming on the road. Carolina began a four-day California swing, with stops at Anaheim and San Jose rounding out a five-game trip that has been fruitless thus far.

Martinez broke a 1-1 tie on an LA power play. Dustin Brown chipped the puck out from behind the net and Martinez let go a slap shot from the high slot at the 8:15 mark.

"It was a power play and we were telling the defenseman to shoot," said Kings coach Darryl Sutter. "Drew (Doughty) and Slava (Voynov) did a good job prior, then Marty (Martinez) went out and did it again."

Justin Williams added an empty-netter with 1:01 left to seal the Kings' fifth win in the last six meetings.

"I thought our guys played hard, but we gave six or seven penalties to their team and eventually it's going to hurt you," said Hurricans coach Kirk Muller. "That was a big goal that they scored finally, we just didn't capitalize."

The teams traded goals in the final minute of the first period.

Mike Richards scored on a sharp-angle shot that deflected off a Carolina player's stick with 56 seconds remaining. The Hurricanes countered with 15 seconds left on an Andrej Sekera point shot that found the back of the net through traffic.

Game Notes

Carolina was 0-for-3 on the power play and hasn't scored with the man advantage in eight straight road games ... Hurricanes forward Alexander Semin sat out with a lower-body injury.
